Host a Backyard Chicken Garden Party! (PICS!)

This will be the second time I do this. It's like a tupperware party, but I'm not selling anything... except the idea of keeping backyard chickens! It started because I had friends who were interested, but skeptical. It's an informal, drop-in, drop-out party. I save up my eggs and make a...

What early signs of gendr do you look for?

What are some early signs you look for to determine whether your chicks are pullets or cockerels? I see lots of people comment on "what is this chicken" notes saying "looks like a roo," but giving no explanation. I'm sure lots of other members would like to have some tips. I sure would!

Are there any EEs without cheek fluff?

I wanted to hear other people's experiences. I have a chick with green legs but no cheek fluff, beard, muff, whatever you want to call it... I still haven't identified her for sure... and there's another thread going with photos of her, but this is a separate discussion. What range of...

Update: Help ID please! (bonus: FUNNY story)

Okay, so I just came home from church today to find that I have 2 chickens I didn't have before. The renter who lives in the front of our house said a guy in coveralls came by and asked if we were the "house with the chickens." We live in the city, so it's pretty unusual, I guess... but the...

    "Roo service" ...(funny DH story)

I just had to share this funny story. Yesterday, my roo kept standing around by the kitchen door all morning, and finally DH told me he had a confession. He said every day after I leave for work, he lets the roo in the house, gives him a few bites of bread, and then lets him go into the bedroom...

Help! Need downloadable pamphlets on chicken care or factory farms

I couldn't figure out which section to post this thread in... hope it's ok! I'm having a backyard chicken garden party tomorrow, with a bunch of friends who either have chickens or want to start. They are bringing friends of their own, too. I just realized it would be a good idea to have...

Help! Anyone hatching out some sex-links?

Because of some encouraging results from my earlier informal study, my friend's son is doing his science project on the correlation between egg shape and gender. Here's how you would participate: You number your eggs (right on the shell) and then lay them out they way they normally lay (on...

    My new tractor! Yippee!

My old chiciken tractor was heavy and too small for my expanding flock, and my hens didn't have the sense to get out of the rain. ...Also, my girls need a secure place to sleep now that I have to separate them from the Roos, who get dibs on the nice secure garage coop, as it muffles their...

    wanted - st. louis - 1 barnevelder, 2 ameraucanas (day-old)

I can't get any more than 3 additional hens (actually 2 would be optimal) since I live in the city. I have 2 brown egg layers, and thought a dark brown layer and one or two blue eggers would be really nice addition to my tiny flock! Anyone out there able to help me? pleeeez? I don't get the...

Hatching experiment continues! Please help out!

I'm still looking for more people to participate in a hatching experiment. To see the experiment, you can click the link below. Just submit a photo of your eggs to be hatched. Line them up by hen, and number them right on the shell. I'll calculate the width to length ratio, and then you...

Who wants to participate in a fun experiment?

OK, so I'm interested in finding out how much validity there is to the gender/egg shape connection. So, I thought any of you hatchers out there could help! If you have some eggs in the 'bater, or are about to put some in, you can participate. <b>Just separate them into 2 sets - eggs with...

    New member in St Louis

I have always wanted Chooks. I finally got my yard fenced at the end of summer and got the last hatchlings of the year! The maximum number I can have in the City is 4, so I got only 4. The guy at the feed lot (we had to drive a long way to get there) clearly thought I was a stupid city girl...
