Two roosters: 1 Barred-Holland and 1 Rhode Island Red

I know that Roosters are hard to get rid of, but here goes: I have 2 roosters that were mis-sexed at the hatchery and I already have a grown rooster. I thought I wanted another roo, so I took the Barred-Holland from a friend who had too many roos because of the incorrect sexing. The RIR was a...

How long will "newbie" pecking last?

UPDATE: It's been a while, but I did end up re-homing Ginger with a friend who has 2 very docile chickens. Ginger has been living a wonderfully stress free life there and I get to visit from time to time. :)

Rhode Island Red and Barred-Holland Roos - FREE

I know that Roosters are hard to get rid of, but here goes: I have 2 roosters that were misidentified at the hatchery. I already have a grown rooster and thought I wanted another. I took the Barred-Holland from a friend who had too many roos because of the incorrect sexing, and the RIR was a...

How long will "newbie" pecking last?

Thanks for the reply. Following "introduction protocol" (Love all the information on this site - BTW), I kept them separate to work things out while protected by making a smaller run attached to a large wire dog crate (complete with a roost for them to sleep on) next to the existing coop...

How long will "newbie" pecking last?

I added 4 new girls (rescues dropped at the farm - sigh) to my flock about 3 weeks ago and one girl (Ginger) is being beaten down badly by a hen from the existing flock (Mary Lou). Poor Ginger hides under the coop and will lay flat (beyond submissive) while Mary Lou is around. The worst part...

    Help with this breed

Wanted to give you an update...Nugget is doing well and seems to be healthy and happy. She started laying eggs about 2 months ago and loves to hang around the horse barn. She's very popular with the kids, too. Thank you for all your help.

    Help with possible illness

Update: Nugget is doing well! She lays every other week and is still very "person" oriented. We decided to keep her separate from my regular size chickens, so she hangs around the horse barn and pals around with a duckling and angora rabbit. Thank you all for your help..

    Help with possible illness

Thank you for the help with male/female determination, Eggcessive and Stiggy. My hubby kept telling me it was a girl, but he was just guessing. :) She almost looks like a cross between the Dutch and Japanese, since her gold feathers on her neck do not extend past her chest. She is pretty...

    Help with possible illness

Thank you all for the support. She/he (we're not sure yet) seems to be feeling more secure. The poops look good (no blood), but I am giving her Wazine right now and then will follow with the Safeguard, just in case. She's a friendly little bantam and loves to be held and perch on your...

    Help with possible illness

I picked up some Safeguard paste, too. Some of the other threads said to use Wazine first and follow up with something else. Surprisingly her poops looked OK. No blood, light brown, and a little loose. My biggest concern is feeding her. She doesn't seem to know how to eat crumbles, or she...

    Help with possible illness

I will have to check her poop, but she was not eating/drinking in the short time I was with her. I assumed that she was just in an agitated state due to her circumstances (spent the night in the policman's bathroom, until she got some sleep and could bring her to the farm). Thank you for your...

Flies no more!! Found the perfect fly repellent.

For abbreviations...DE = Diamatacious Earth....you should use "food grade" around the animals and you can usually get it at a farm store. I don't remember what the other abbreviations were. As for fly treatments, vanilla scent or extract seems to be the most popular right now. I buy the...

    Help with possible illness

Hello All, This bird was brought to me today as a rescue. I have it quarantined from my flock. Another poster said that it appears (from the pictures) that there is something wrong with this bird. Droopy eyes...she did seem to want to "sleep" today, but I figured it was from all the...

    Help with this breed

Thank you for the reply...we have her quarantined away from our flock. She was rescued last night from a crime scene (she's apparently has had a pretty tough life)...I will post a picture right away..

    The Renovation

We lost 4 chickens to hawk attacks in June, so we needed to "fortify" an area around the coop for the girls to stay in during the Spring. We still plan to Free Range them when the hawks have moved on (they were feeding their babies at the time). This run also allows us to "pen" the girls up...

    Help with this breed

Hey All, We rescued this little chicken today and we're pretty sure it's a Bantam, but I know nothing about the breed. Thanks.

Interested in determining breeds of the chickens I was given...

Hey all, I'm new to keeping chickens and was given a coop with 15 (I only wanted 3 or 4 -- LOL). Anyhow, I've been researching for the last 6 months or so and think that I can identify a few, but was wondering if I could get some help. I'm fairly confident that this girl is a Leghorn. In...

Lost my first hen today. :(

:( sorry for your loss, too. It's hard not to get attached, and not knowing what happened makes me feel horrible, but I am pretty sure that she was happy. All the hens seem happy to be able to roam free (they, all 15 of them, were in a small pen for their first year and a half of life)...

Lost my first hen today. :(

I have no idea what happened to her, she had no discernable injuries, just a small amount of blood coming from one eye and her mouth. We wonder if she was trampled by a horse...our flock gets to free-range on a 10 acre horse farm. RIP little girl.

Flies no more!! Found the perfect fly repellent.

Kim, that sounds like a great idea! I might have to try that when my trees wear out; just need to make sure they are dry before using them. We may have come up with a new 'coop' product...vanilla scented pine shavings
