    Space Requirements?

Ah, too bad! Okay. Maybe in the future, then... but definitely not now. Thanks! :)

    Space Requirements?

I have a flock of chickens right now, but I'm interested in replacing a few chickens with guinea hens. Someone in the family has a chicken egg allergy (such bad luck!), but thus far guinea eggs are just fine. My chickens aren't free range -- they are confined to a run that's about 140 square...

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

There used to be oleander bushes nearby, but they were taken out awhile ago. ...Unless there were some remaining dried bits that got into the run? It seems unlikely but possible...

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

My only hands-on experience with the insides of birds is a pigeon dissection from...oh...9 years ago? I doubt I'd be able to tell what's normal and what isn't. So I'll pass on doing my own necropsy for the time being, I think. Thanks for your help, everyone.

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

Well, she died this morning. :( I'm not sure what to do now. Is it worth doing a necropsy? The local university extension branch charges $260 -- is that my best option? Would a regular vet be better (or worse)? Or should I not worry about it, since none of my other chickens have any symptoms?

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

What volume(s) of food and fluid should I be giving her per day?

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

After administering lots of fluids and a minor amount of liquid food, she seems a little more coherent. Still very weak and underweight (I can feel her keel and most of her bones), but she can shuffle around her box a couple steps at a time. I'm always surprised to find her still breathing. I...

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

I've been having trouble getting her to drink, even with a syringe. I don't have a tube, so I've been placing some liquid on her beak and letting her drink it as it runs down the side. Slow-going, but at least it works (and doesn't seem as stressful). The other buckeye in the flock has taken...

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

The person who was looking after them said this started just yesterday. It hasn't been as hot the past few days, now that monsoon season has started. Does heat stress accumulate?

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

Oh, I forgot to mention: She is a Buckeye, about 1 year old (well, maybe more like 15 month).

Very sick chicken! Lethargic, underweight, breathing heavy

I just got back from a trip to find one of my chickens in pretty rough shape. I put her in a box and brought her inside, but I'm not sure how best to medicate. Background: - She was lying next to the waterer (which they usually do to keep cool -- I live in Arizona, and the summer is pretty...

    Bullying problem?

I've never let them free range. It's not the best neighborhood and the fence doesn't go all the way around the house. There are also hawks all over the place. :/ She didn't always pace, so I'm not sure where this sudden need to get out came from.

    Bullying problem?

She's the only one with that many black spots. There are a couple others who have maybe one or two, but they seem fine. She can still eat and drink (there are two waterers and feeders, so she can get to one or the other). I got all my chickens at the same time too, so she's not a recent...

    Wet straw in the run

Let me start off by saying that I live in the desert, so rain is not usually a problem. I have straw lining the run, which has been working great.... up until now. We had a surprise storm that caused the straw to get soaking wet, and now I can't figure out how to get it dried out again. I...

    Bullying problem?

A few days ago, I noticed that the smallest of my RIR hens had some black spots on her comb. They look like they're from pecking. No matter where she goes, someone will peck her. Even the two non-RIR hens that used to be on the bottom of the ladder are now pecking at her. Even since the past...

    What breed are these featherballs?

Ok, I also asked the feed store about where they get their chickens, and it looks like the hatchery they usually order from carries Buckeyes. Must have been a mix-up or part of the assortment. Well, thanks for helping me solve the mystery, everyone!

    What breed are these featherballs?

Okay, it took me a LONG time to get these pictures up, but here are the best I could get. It's so hard to get them to stay still for long. :P I guess these are pea combs? I hadn't really gotten a close look until recently, and I think I'm still not clear on what pea combs are. I thought the...

    What breed are these featherballs?

I'm not sure if they're pea combs or just very, very small single combs (if that even happens). I'll try to get a picture tomorrow -- won't be able to do it tonight before the sun goes down. :( Thanks for the input everyone!

    What breed are these featherballs?

Hey, no problem! Any insight is helpful. I was also thinking maybe they were a Cornish/RIR mix or something... Just trying to decide if it's worth keeping them around or if they're better suited for the freezer. :/

    What breed are these featherballs?

I got my first flock over the summer: 12 "Rhode Island Reds." There are 10 I'm confident are actually RIRs, but these two I'm not so sure about. - They are much larger than the RIRs: maybe an inch taller and a good 1-2 inches fatter. I poked their chests once, and there is definitely...
