So, I have the two older hens in one coop and the NYD chicks in another. I would like to meld my little chicken gangs. The NYD chicks are a roo and a pullet. George, the pullet, is a wuss. Hattie, one of the older hens is a psychopath.
I have let them free range together for a few weeks...
Hi
These chicks hatched New Years' Day. The black one is Astrid, some sort of "barnyard mix" and the white one is George, a splash marans.
So, is Astrid a roo and is George a pullet? Or is it too soon to tell? The photos suck. Cell phone, small brooder, wiggly chicks, poor lighting...
So, I was watching my chickens this last week. They come out of their run, gorge themselves on the proffered mealworms, then wander around, pecking a bit. Then they come over, near me, squat, sort of stretch a wing out and roll onto their side, with their hackle feathers fluffed up.

Hi all
I am thinking of hatching some eggs in the spring. I am looking at incubators and especially used ones. Can the Styrofoam ones be cleaned and sanitized? I would want to use it over and over when I add new hens to the flock, and I would like to get some fun, rare-breed eggs so I would...
My teensy little baby chicks in my avatar, that I only got three weeks ago, now look like chickens! I even heard one "bok" today instead of chirping. They have gotten so much heavier that they broke the roost I made them! Wow, that was fast. I think I still have months to wait for eggs, but...
Just whining.
See, I saw all these threads about using the wood from pallets to make a coop, and I want to upgrade from my repurposed doghouse to a "real" coop. My mind became full of ideas, but, alas, my bank account did not become full of cash. So I thought I would make my own. But, I...
Hi all!
I live in NM and am new to this chicken thing. I first looked at coops online, and they were garbage, so I got a huge 5' x 5' dog house off of Craig's list for free and set it up as a coop. I made a roost and could install premade nest boxes and maybe lift and angle the roof to make...
I'm so ignorant. This is my first experience with chickens. This chick is 4 weeks and a few days old and is a (hopefully) female feedstore Ameraucana (EE? I don't know which to call her at this point. She doesn't have green legs and they said she was a blue ameraucana, but it was a feedstore...
Hi there!
I have been thinking about chickens for a while, and lurking here, there, and everywhere trying to learn. I did wildlife rescue for years, which usually involves birds in boxes, so I was a bit leery. Yesterday, I acquired my first chicks. I was told they were an Ameraucana, a...
