    Rooster's First Aggression

He just started trying to crow and it's so cute, it's like he's going through puberty and his voice cracks. Well, today I got my first taste of his hormones when I picked up one of the hens. I've picked them up before without any trouble, but I think he took exception to me carrying her away...

    Will chickens always fight?

My flock is at 9 weeks and I was just wondering if they are always going to be picking fights with one another and chasing each other around. Or do they eventually settle down? They've all been together since hatching. Well, except for one who was added at about three weeks.

    Question for breeders

So I'm totally green to this. But are ya'll like dog breeders? Where, like.. say I wanted a Maran simply because I wanted to get some chocolate eggs in my flock. Since Marans are hard to come by from hatcheries, could I go to a breeder and inquire there? Do I have to sign paperwork saying I...

    I have to control myself!

So my current little flock were chosen for their temperament and egg production. Now, they're just reaching 6 weeks and are about to be put into the coop and run. But I'm already trying to plan my next flock. I say "next" because I'm living with my parents and I convinced them to get chickens...

    Feed Containers - Thief Proof

Does anyone have any suggestions for some large feed containers that would be water-proof and thief-proof? I would go with simple garbage cans, but obviously those aren't very good for keeping raccoons or possums out and I'm worried about simple locking mechanisms because raccoons are too smart.

    Providing Feed for "Free Rangers"

So at the moment, my chicks are only five weeks. They go outside in a little pen during the day and have access to water at all times. Then at night, I bring them back in to go into their brooder, which has food in it. I woke up the next morning to put them outside to find they had eaten all of...

My Easter Egger takes herself for a roo

Okay, so I'm not even quite 100% she's not a roo. But her comb isn't coming in as fast as my actual Roo's is and he's two weeks younger than her. 5 out of 6 of them are 5 weeks this Monday. The Easter Egger is probably about two weeks older than that. But the two of them pick fights a lot. And...

Deep Litter Question - Small coop

We're going to have a 4x5 floor coop and elevate it so it'll be at about waist high. Can you do the deep litter method in an elevated coop this small or is it only recommended for larger, walk-in coops?

    Free Ranging Questions

I currently have six chicks that are only a few days old. One is a rooster. I want to keep him. We have a run ready that is 84 sq feet and a coop being constructed that will be 20 sq feet. The run is sturdy so the chickens will have ready access to the run at all times. We live on 2+ acres of...

Nesting Boxes - This might be silly question

This question is a little early since my family is just starting out in raising chickens. But do nesting boxes have to be at a certain height? I see a lot of people put them a few feet above the ground, which seems nice to me since you don't have to bend down so much to gather the eggs. But if...

Different Aged Chicks - Okay to Mix?

I have five chicks that will be shipped to me next week. They will be a day-old when I get them. The feed store down the road from me has some new chicks of a different breed that I wanted that weren't available to ship to me. Would it be wise to get some of those chicks and mingle them with...

    Controlling Brood Sizes

Can you control the size of a hen's brood? Would it be bad to take eggs away from her if you only want her to have a certain amount of chicks? Or would it just be best to let her hatch as many as possible and then give away any chicks you don't want to keep?

First Coop - Altering A Dog Kennel

This is about the size of the dog kennel we have (this is not ours, I just tried to find a picture on Google of a kennel that was the same size). I intend to alter it to become a coop or maybe a coop/run? There is a top to it, and while there is a chain link bottom that can be placed underneath...

    First Timer - Panicking

I just ordered 1 male Dominique chick, 2 female Dominiques, 1 female Light Brahma and 1 female New Hampshire. They're going to arrive Sept 10-12. I have a dog kennel that we'll be modifying to accommodate them once they're old enough to live outside. Until then, I know they have to be in a box...
