    Need emergency advice--asap please help

I'm not totally sure, it doesn't look bloody but there looks to be a layer of fat on the right side so it could be an open wound.

    Need emergency advice--asap please help

I need ideas for any home first aid I can do to help her. Please tell me anything I can do at home to help her. Our dog has been great with our chickens for over a year. In the last few months he's started to give chase, as though they are toys. He's never once bit, nipped or hurt one even as...

Two dumb questions about winter laying vs. spring laying

Thank you very much! I wish I had thought about this before half the winter had passed, we've had so many wasted eggs. I'm going to give the girls a break and keep winters easy on them from now on. :)

Two dumb questions about winter laying vs. spring laying

I know these are dumb questions but- We've been supplementing with light over the winter and the girls have kept laying, though the eggs are often frozen before we get to them. I'm thinking of just stopping with the light and letting them rest up, even if it means slowing or stopping egg laying...

    Meat Birder~ advice

Hi everyone, We would like to do a few meat birds when it warms up (we're in MN). I'm new to it (we've been vegetarian for almost a decade but have started eating meat again with a focus on organic meat). I'm wondering if you guys have any good websites that reference the process to kill the...

-40 to -65 degree windchill for next 3 days- HELP

Hi, This is my first year with hens. I'm in MN and we have a small coop with lots of ventilation, and the last time it got to -15 I covered the coop with a blanket for 2 days to cover some of the ventilation and a few of my girls got some frost bite on their combs. Now it's supposed to be WAY...

    LED's safe?

We're thinking of just getting white string Christmas lights- will those be safe? Are they too much of a fire risk?

    LED's safe?

I need to add light to my coop, a chicken lady blog said to get CFL rope lights, but the store only has LED rope lights-- will they work? Would using a bulb be more of a fire risk than rope lights? What kind of bulb should I get if rope lights don't work? Thankyou!

    Americana? Auracana? Easter Egger?

Hi there, I'm new to backyard chickens so forgive me for asking what is likely an easy question. The gal I got her from said she was an Americana pullet. She has the cheek tufts- does this mean she is an easter egger? Thanks!

    First Egg Countdown

I'm going to look forward to checking the nesting boxes each day now, especially as the other two girls start laying. It felt like getting a gift this morning:) I just hope our lessened daylight hours won't impede their laying. I'm really not wanting to put any lightbulbs in their coop or use...

    First Egg Countdown

We have 3 girls and got our first egg yesterday (could have been the day before since I didn't check the nesting boxes since I thought we were never going to get eggs, then we got our second one today. They are beautiful light brown in color, and much smaller than I anticipated. I'm guessing...

    Advice for a first timer

Hi all, We got our first 4 chickens about 2 months ago and about 4-5 weeks ago our Plymouth Barred Rock got sick and died. We worked hard to save her, but ultimately she didn't make it and thankfully the other 3 seem totally fine so the vet thinks it was likely something anatomically wrong...

Grass seed safe for free ranging chickens?

Ha ha! Glad to know it won't hurt them, I'll have to find a way to keep them off that area:)

    Weird question

I was hoping to stay more natural, but everything we tried failed. I ended up having to use Sevin dust on the hens last night. Since it's a harsh pesticide & carcinogen for humans, I've been nervous about holding any of the girls today because of the potential for residual dust on their...

Grass seed safe for free ranging chickens?

Hi, I'd love to throw some grass seed down on this yucky, muddy, shady area of our yard...I'm worried the hens will eat the seed. Will it hurt them?
