How vulnerable are small ducks to copperheads?

Today I saw a 2' long brown snake dart under our front porch this am. And or course today when the girls were outside grazing they wanted to sleep under the deck to escape the sun and hawks in the area. I have a small mallard and runner mix that is on the small side. Is it likely for a...

Is it cruel to keep a house duck indoors all the time?

I am struggling with what to do with my beloved pet Mallard I have raised from a small flock a year ago. Her flock mates migrated the first fall, but she chose to say with us/humans. She must have loved the handouts of bell pepper and lettuce too much. Our solution was to bring her indoors and...

HELP!! Need tips on introducing a house duck to an existing outside flock.

We are preparing to find Missy, a small female Mallard, a new home and have some concerns. First, is that we have raised her as a house duck since an adolescent. From a baby she was raised with a flock of about 9 ducks, but when they all migrated but her, we brought her inside. She was not...

    It's official....Missy loves bubblewrap!

Missy plays like a dog with this 3"X3" ball of Bubblewrap. She will come from across the room to attack it. I am thinking about getting some cat or dog toys for her.

    Missy is moulting

There are feathers everywhere, but Missy is worth the hassle! Prior to her moulting she was very submissive and would even let me pet her body under her wings, but now it is "HANDS OFF". It is like she has become more "wild" since moulting and putting her diaper on is difficult. Is her body more...

    Missy has gone broody!

I made the mistake of leaving an egg in Missy's crate. She didn't come out for 2 days and stopped making eggs. As soon as I, sadly removed the egg, she became social again. Thank goodness! She was a good mama for a couple days though. I also have seen her nesting in cozy spots outside. Here is...

    Can anyone identify these ducks?

I saw these ducks at a public pond in Dahlonega Georgia. They were on the large side, probably 10 pounds. Coloring was green black white and chestnut. They had blue eyes. Pretty ducks. At the same pond there was a crested duck as well. Unusual. I though crested were domesticated ducks, not wild?

My mallard is laying an egg a day! I read they only produce 80-100 a year?

Missy is has laid an egg a day for 2 weeks straight!? This is her first laying season as well. Is this unusual, or is there a slow season where she won't lay at all? Cause at this rate she looks to be a Khaki Campbell, dressed as a Mallard. Well, she is a happy duck!

Is it ok to keep a single duck raised with a flock?

I have been raising a flock of Mallards for last few months and they have all migrated except for a single female. She has never made the loud loney call till recent events and before was fairly quiet. We bring her in at night and no longer let her graze during day, instead pin her in her coup...

Concern for outnumbered hens. Do I need to be?

I have been caring for 9 Mallard ducks for about 2 months now. I am concerned because I believe it is turning out we only have 2 females. I have read the ratio needs to be the opposite and I fear for the hens lives. Should I be concerned? And what should/can we do? We plan on as soon as they...
