Is there anything we could find at grocery store for an undiagnosed but generally-something-is-wrong-with-her hen? We can not figure out what's wrong, but she seems lame but has an appetite. She is 2.5 years old.
See post below "2 year old barred rock limping" - for more details.
Does anyone have actual experience using this on birds? We're having a mystery-illness situation right now, and for good measure, we treated their coop for mites, even though we don't actually see evidence of them (or I don't know what I'm looking for).
One of our hens is limping severely, but...
How do you go about bathing an uncooperative and maybe uncomfortable hen? I'm trying to figure out what I can do for my hen (see previous message about limping 2 year old) - and wondering if this might be a good idea ... since she seems to have a wet messy butt/vent.
thanks
background: we have backyard chickens in Houston, and they spend most of their time in a large enclosed run with access to an above-ground roosting house with hay on the floor. They have perches, which they sleep on, and we clean the poop-boards once a week or more, if they are extra-messy...
I had some old dried beans that my family wasn't interested in, so I cooked them up for the chickens. I added just a wee bit of salt. At first they were not sure, but today, when I gave them the second half, it was gone in 3 minutes flat.
I've also got some old rice that is past it's prime...
someone came to my house yesterday to pick up something ... she said our chickens scared her! so she didn't come in to pick the thing up ... (she also couldn't find the front gate ...)
sigh.
we have 5 hens: cochin (who happens to be broody, so she wasn't even out), bantam silkie something...
I thought I had read that the shells provide some nutrition.
Due to fruit flies, I can't leave eggshells in the kitchen to dry out. I put some in the microwave just now, but I'm having no luck with crushing them well.
I am looking for tips and suggestions.
thanks!

So, we have a cochin, a silkie-mixture, a barred rock, a black sex link, and a red somethin' - all hens, no rooster. The first two lay bantam eggs, but the hens are super sweet, so we forgive them for their tiny eggs. The last one hasn't started laying yet, but her sibling at a friend's house...
we have a tractor :

(that picture is the day we got it in Feb - it's relocated now and working out quite well)
So, our chickens free range most days - unless we're not going to be at home for several hours, and on those days...
I just patted around the girls' nest (which is in the most inconvenient corner of their roosting house - where I can't actually "see", so I must feel around). There weren't any eggs, so I walked back to the house and was instantly overwhelmed by a crawling sensation on my arm/hand. The bugs...
We have a tadpole pond ... we can't keep the chickens out of the part of the yard where it is. They drink water out of the pond. Are they eating the tadpoles, too? I sure hope not!! We need them for mosquito control!!
thanks

We are in Houston, hot & muggy ... we have 6 free-ranging hens in our back yard. The flies are getting RIDICULOUS!!!! Currently, the tractor-style coop is located near our back door, and the flies are getting in the house. We're planning on relocating the coop a bit further from the back...
Is our hen going to ALWAYS make tons of noise about laying an egg?
We've only had her 2 days, but she's making a ton of racket ... like for 2 hours ... mixed with behavior that makes us (novices) think that she wants to lay an egg. Beatrix is a barred rock - about 7 months old. The second...
We bought 2 (barred rock & black sex link) hens from a large flock which is free-range. She said they had some drainage issues and thinks they should be dewormed. Otherwise, they were not vaccinated. They are 7 months old, and we're going to introduce them to our 2 5month hens in a couple...
We've been outside watching Chicken TV for 2 hours now, no eggs - but here's the back-story:
We have 2 hens that are maybe 4-5 months old (EE & cochin) ... one just started laying eggs 6 days ago (3 "little" eggs now). We purchased (2) 7-month hens last night (barred rock & black sex link)...
We have gotten 3 eggs now ... all small brown eggs. One every second day since last Wednesday. Our hens are a cochin (Esther) and a NOT "silkie ameraucana" (Goldy). Goldy has light bluish spots on the side of her head, where someone might suspect her ears would be (but I'm not very good at...
Our coop has a fully enclosed run that is about 4x12' and a roosting house that is about 4x6'. They free range most of the time, in addition - but there are days when they stay in the run.
Right now, there are two perching branches across the width...
We have 2 hens + 7 chicks which we are raising for a friend (we plan to keep 2-3, just hoping they are all girls)
Is there any reason not to eat the first eggs?
Our coop has a fully enclosed run that is about 4x12' and a roosting house that is about 4x6'. They free range most of the time, in...
We have 7 chicks, about 5 weeks old, we guess ~ and 2 hens, about 4-5 months old.
We live in Houston, and except for tonight, the weather isn't too cold for them. The chicks are living in a small-but-adequate cage in our garage right now. It was outside until last night's cold snap.
The...
Our hens are about 4-5 months old. We bought them Feb 24. They were together in a slightly overcrowded run with other hens. We were hoping they would start laying soon. (we are novices)
Yesterday, we watched (in horror) one sitting on top of another, appearing to be humping her. My...
