    How old are these chicks??

Last week (8/5/14), I purchased six Black Copper Marans chicks from a breeder in Pueblo, CO. She said, "We had one batch hatch June 20th and the other batch hatched July 10th so it is possible" that some are younger than others. Still, having purchased RIR pullets last year & being told that...

Three S Farm Not returning my Emails! Suggestions on another hatchery?

High Mountain Chic: If it's any consolation, I have tried several times to contact Three S, even sending an email to ask if they're still in business...no response. Did you ever find a source in Colorado? I'm in Colorado Springs, and am looking to buy some pullets in mid-August, after I move...

Sick Barred Rock hen -- help!

I guess I should add what I did: On another post, I read that someone tried some Keflex that they had on hand. I too, had some Keflex left over from a surgery last year, as well as some 10cc saline-filled syringes (long story, not necessary here). So, I emptied the 50mg Keflex capsules, mixed...

Sick Barred Rock hen -- help!

Update: Markette (the barred rock hen) is well again! It's been a long road, but the antibiotics worked, and she laid her first post-treatment egg today. Small, but perfect. WooHoo!

Sick Barred Rock hen -- help!

9 month-old Sick Barred Rock Hen ( Markette) The first thing Markette came down with was Wry Neck. My vet advised me to treat her with vitamin E & selenium, but I couldn’t find that combination anywhere except on-line, and I simply couldn’t afford it at the time. I opted for scrambled eggs &...

    CHICKEN SOUNDS

Here's a cool link with audio & "translations": http://modernhomesteading.ca/blog/our-first-chickens/chicken-calls-and-vocalizations The reason I started looking into this (besides general curiosity), was that yesterday, one of my RIR's was standing stock still, very erect, and making a long...

Sick Barred Rock hen -- help!

Hey Flock Master -- Thanks for responding! No, it does not appear to be vent gleet, and her crop does empty. The droppings do appear to be foamy yellow. Thanks for the excellent links (I have been reading through them for hours). So while none of the diagnoses fit her to a "T", I will...

Sick Barred Rock hen -- help!

I have an 8-month-old Barred Rock hen who is going downhill. Her signs/symptoms are: Waxy, grayish-tinged comb (no lesions like avian pox); Pale yellowish-white loose stools; Lethargic, standing in one place for long periods; Tail down; Not laying; Losing weight. Odd kinda sweet/foul odor...

    mice in coop?

I'm going to try the Nooski traps...they're available on Amazon for about $10. I have discovered mouse burrows in the chicken run (don't want my birds to injure a foot/leg!), and droppings in the coop. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Can Chickens Eat Grapes?

If grapes are safe (and it appears they are -- not for dogs, though -- in dogs, grapes & raisins can cause liver damage) -- you can freeze them & that may reduce the choking hazard...they'll peck at them for a while first.

    Blood clots?

Also, thanks for the link to the webpage -- none of the samples pictured look exactly like what I'm seeing, but I'll monitor her output & maybe get a photo to submit. So far, she shows no signs of lethargy or increased/decreased water/food intake. Thanks again!

    Blood clots?

No, haven't wormed her yet, but thanks for the input -- I'll do so ASAP.

    Blood clots?

My Barnevelder hen (a mature stray I recently acquired...long story) just laid 2 eggs in 2 days -- on 9/19 & 9/20 -- her first eggs since I got her about a month ago. Now she is passing normal-looking feces, but there are also a few small black gelatinous droppings as well, about the size of a...

    Well Hi There...

I've been visiting the BYC site for a few years now, investigating the possibility of starting up a "City Coop" in Colorado Springs. I had written it off as too expensive (cost-v-benefit). But then, about a month ago, my neighbors spotted a stray chicken just strolling down the street (what...
