Today I found a large patch of insect "eggs" on one of my eggs. I'm confused as to what they would be. The temps are 10 to 15 degrees, so it's not flies, but I do have house sparrows flying in and out of the hen house. Please don't tell me it is mites or lice cysts on the egg.
I have some gorgeous chicks that were hatched Nov. 14th. Now help me figure if I have a "breed". I have a BA rooster, a BO rooster, and BA and BO hens. I know they crossed and some of the chicks have the most beautiful coloring to their feathers. Are they considered a sex-link?
I gave up trying to break my broody BOs. And set eggs under them. 2 within a day of each other. Hatching started Friday, last one hatched yesterday. Out of 20 eggs only 10 hatched. The first chicks hatched took up with momma #2. She now has all 10. Momma #1 that hatched the first ones is still...
This guy (I'm assuming it's a roo) is huge compared to his sibling chicks. He was born Feb.13. I only had 4 BOs make it out of the shipment and 9 BAs.
Look at the length of his legs!
Do you think he's not buff orp and has some other breed mixed in? All of the hens around him were born same...
One by one, my girls are going broody. I have one in lock up, been in 3 full days and nights. She will not stop. I let her out this morning and she attacked the hen with chicks trying to steal them. Back in lockup she went. I have 2 hens hatched out. I have 2 more hens on eggs and tonight...
I placed 4 BA eggs under my broody bantam............. 21 days ago. I came in from work today. went to the henhouse to get scratch and saw a tiny little beak and eyes peaking out from under Ms. dottie's wing. :weee:celebrate Oh. Oh. Oh the cutest BA chickie ever!!!! 2 more of the eggs are...
which get their tail feathers first? roo or hen? I have the BO chicks marked with different color magic markers to see if our guesses are correct. Now we're watching tail feathers..........
I was looking forward to the new ones coming Sunday/monday. But with the snow we're having I knew we wouldn't be able to get to the post office and I was so afraid they wouldn't make it............
Called McMurray and as usual they were very nice, helpful and understanding of my need to push...
Several of my girls are going though light molt. I have light on them, and have been trying to turnup the protein. Just not enough eggs! I have 21 girls and get anywhere from 2 to 8 eggs a day. I have several regular buyers and I have more folks that want eggs. There is a female body builder...
I pick up discarded fruits and veggies at the local store when I'm the "first" one there. cukes, tomatoes, grapes, cabbage leaves. the girls love them. i haven't been the "first" for a few days so I bought a head of lettuce for them. I set the head of lettuce in the feed trough at 7:30 am. The...
what was fed to the chickens to harden shells? I have not fed oyster shell the first time and the girls' egg shells are very good. they free range from daylight til dark, we have alot of limestone outcroppings they feed over, all the scraps from the house and garden, Dumor layer feed in their...
O.K., trying to decide which roosters to keep. I'm not keeping for show but have questions. the BA supposedly has pinkish/whitest light color bottom of feet. Jersey Giants are yellow on bottom of feet..... according to standards? I ordered all BAs, but the most gorgeous roo I have is yellow...
I have a " flock" of black australorps. 23 hens and 5 roosters. I want to cull 3 roos. They are 14 weeks old. All 5 of the roos are gorgeous, very manly. How do I decide which are to go? Do I look at size, body weight, tail feathers, give an SOL test?
I think it was an accident on his part.
All of the chicks were outside except for him. He was up in the window, looking down on all of us and he crowed! Not once, but 3 times. He couldn't quite get the last note which made it funnier.
Here's a pic of him in the coop with his girls. ( the BA is...
Chicks had been in coop for a week, finally got temp pen put up. Of course they took their time coming out to the big world.
Almost all out.
Now it sounds like a herd of elephants inside when they hear me opening the pop door.
And, they all put themselves back inside nolater than 8:15.
Good...
