We are very new to owning chickens & did not expect to have any eggs hatch! Now that one has & their are 4 broody hens is their anything special we should be doing for/with the chicks? Or does the hen take care of them?
We haven't had the rooster around for the past month we found another home...

i believe it's pasty butt. i'm no expert, so use the search for the forum " pasty butt". there are many discussions on this topic. before we got our chicks i did a bit of reading on here and found that if you put a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a gallon of their drinking water it helps to...
yogifink, not necessarily bugs but wasps, hornets and flies. we live on a dairy farm and have an over abundance of flies. if somebody says sting my hand swells up like a baseball mitt. i don't mind grasshoppers, crickets or june bugs at all. oh yeah i don't want mosquitoes in there either. the...
if there's a menards by you. they sell wooden screen doors in a couple different sizes for $20. for me it was faster than building one. they come with a screen already on but i also screwed the hardware cloth on the inside. i figured my birds won't peck holes in the screen that way, and the...
we have 15 buff orps that are 5 weeks old now, they have been in the coop since day 1. we used a kids swimming pool as the brooder up until a week and a half ago. i've been leaving the heat lamp off till i get home from work (about 11 p.m.) and back off when i get up. the lamp is on a dimmer...
our chickens are 5 weeks old and i think there's a rooster in the bunch. a fellow chicken guy at work said he doesn't like the roosters because of the "yucky stuff in the eggs". anybody notice this? if so what is it?
thanks again everyone, gages gramps
i've read here that the roost for buff orpingtons should only be 2 feet high because of bumble foot. that really doesn't leave much room for a poop board. and if i did put in a poop board it would eliminate quite a bit of floor space. appreciate any thoughts and words of wisdom. new to chickens...
thanks for everyones input.i was saving the "leftovers" in the fridge till it was worthwhile to grind up. 2 days later they started eating everything.
thanks again, gages gramps
i asked this question in my intro. the chicks are eating everything else just leaving the wheat. it's organic starter so pretty pricey, hate to throw it out. they are not getting grit yet ,would that help? any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. we're new to this and can use all...
hello everyone thanks for having us. we decided to get some chicks this year, 15 buff orpinigtons. my grandson and the neighbor girl are both excited about it. we're trying the organic route. two weeks in and so far so good. i have a question, i'll post it here, if i should post it somewhere...
