I feel like I've been away for MONTHS! Life has been busy and throwing me some major curve balls. I had to rehome one hen for her screeching, and still have 3 RIR's left. Ever since it got even remotely cold I am only getting 1-2 eggs a day. I know my one gal, Lemon, our special chicken doesn't...
I am a chef by trade and LOVE my immersion blender. Of course I have the super expensive one to make soup, etc. All this talk of homemade mayo has me yearning for some and I never knew I could do it so easily!
All feed can be fermented. It doesn't matter if it is crumbles, pellets or otherwise. Same method for all. My chicks went on it from Day 1 and have never had anything but fermented, started with chick starter now layer crumbles. They are 18 months old now.
I used to show chickens in 4H and I thought we were taught Animal Husbandry at the time. This was 40 years ago. I never remember being told to look for mites or lice. Now that I have chickens as an adult I check them weekly. Could it be that the parasite infestation was a non-issue way back when...
Aren't most birds shown at the Fair 4-H or FFA projects? Are they true to breed or did it appear these were all meat birds? I've never been to the fair here but I raised chickens as a child and we showed them at our county fair.
I would have said something. That is just horrible about the...
I was in Casa Grande over the weekend and went into Cal-Ranch. I looked at the chicks, really looked. Thank goodness the BR brooder was empty. Wasn't interested in the other breeds! I came home with a jerky maker thingy for the hubby!
My chickens only get fed once a day when I am out of town and have someone feed for me. They come a little later in the morning than I normally feed and give enough that they have access most of the day. They don't starve, believe me.
By fermented feed, I mean that I take store bought commercial layer crumbles and mix them with water until it is fermented. That is the only feed my chickens get other than table scraps on a RARE occasion and a scratch mix put out for them to play with about every 2 weeks.
Nothing. If your feed is fermented ideally they have all the nutrition they need until the next feeding. They are better able to utilize the nutrients in the feed so they eat less.
The only thing I add to my FF bucket is Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (BOSS). They sell them at Walmart and I usually get a large bag at a feed store. It is sold with the wild bird seed, not in the poultry department.
I feed FF 12 months out of the year. I am in AZ so my feed never freezes. My girls usually eat a good majority of their ration within the first hour of feeding. If they don't finish it all, I add it back to the bucket and stir it in.
I don't leave access to dry. My birds have been on FF from chicks and have never had dry food. I happen to feed twice a day but that isn't necessary. LOTS of people feed only once a day.
Don't put anything into your fermented bucket except grains, seeds, feed, etc. I don't feed moldy food to...
During the summer I scooped the leftovers back into the bucket since I live where it is very dry and if left overnight or all day it would turn to concrete. With the cooler temps I leave it out. I feed twice a day and usually by evening the morning feeding is gone. The afternoon snack though...
