    Sick Chicken - Help Please!

Hi Everyone, I have 9 chickens who are all approximately 22 weeks old. A few of my hens have recently started laying over the past week. This afternoon, my partner and I were out in their coop giving them treats (bread, fresh veggies, etc) and all of the chickens were fine. We've gone back...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Yes, we live in Jimboomba, out near Beaudesert (still working in Annerley...go figure). We bought them from Heritage Hatching and Hens. And, despite all of this, I would probably still purchase chickens through them again. They told us that they had lost 16 chicks in one night. They're keeping...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Well we lost 2 more in the space of 2 days. I spoke to a family friend who has had chickens for 20+ years and she said that, in her experience, once one gets cocci in the way that mine have, they generally will all get it even if you treat them with Amprol. I contacted the hatchery yesterday...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Hi Martine1. Thanks for the advice :) I sent my partner yesterday to our local produce store which is owned by our vet. He described all of the symptoms to the lady there (she's the vet) and she has said that it sounds like cocci - her description was of them getting the flu. She has given us...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

So our chicks are now almost one month old...and we lost another one! Very randomly. My partner checked on them when he left for work, and then I did the same about 2 hours later. They were fine when he left and then one was gone when I left. Am really confused about what is going on. Do you...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Wow BryceR, what a great setup. Love it!! Does anyone else have issues with their chicks getting frightened when they reach into their brooder? I figure they think it's a predator trying to get in, but I reach in there multiple times per day (with treats sometimes too!) and they still seem afraid.

    New chicks to existing chicks...

I thought they might be better separate as well, but the silkies are just over 3 weeks and haven't been a problem - had them with day olds and they were actually quite protective. The new chicks are only a few days older than my others (silkies are still the oldest) so thought it might be...

    New chicks to existing chicks...

Just wanted to now if anyone had some advice for adding new 2 week old chicks to my existing flock of 1-2 week olds? The hatchery is replacing the chicks that we lost, but I'm a little nervous about adding them into the brooder. We have 2 silkies in there already who are about 3.5 weeks old, and...

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

Have changed my brooder set-up as we needed to expand - they've started trying to spread their wings and take off a little already! Have changed it a bit since this picture - added some towels over the sugar cane mulch until we can switch to wood shavings tomorrow morning

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Well, we lost another one this morning. I emailed the hatchery and they responded fairly quickly, and have recommended that I switch to shavings instead of sugar cane mulch. I am willing to give this a go. They are replacing my 3 chicks that I've lost. I asked them about medicated feed, and...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

I'll have to have a look on the bag, I would've checked but our power's been cut out in our shed where we keep it. I'll give the yoghurt a try tomorrow morning, in regards to the feed potentially not agreeing with them or them not having enough roughage, what are my best options?

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Thanks, Donrae. I've got my fingers crossed that everyone else is healthy! I don't think it's bacterial, either, so I'm not going to give them any antibiotics. I'm hoping it's just a predisposition and that they have just been unhealthy from when they hatched. Wish there was a way to know for...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

Thanks for the replies. They are on chick starter but not sure if it's medicated or not. The rest of them are absolutely fine...one of our bantam chicks is obviously smaller and a bit quiet sometimes and is the only other one I'm concerned about but at least she's eating We've checked them...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

I did put some sugar into the water supply for her on Sunday (got them on Saturday afternoon) but she still just continued to sleep a lot and spent a lot of time by herself. All of them have access to food and water 24/7. Posted a pic of the brooder in the brooder thread on Sunday, but...

    Chicks dying...advice needed

New chick mummy here so need some advice... I got home from work this afternoon and all of my chicks seemed fine - absolutely no different to usual. I went and did some gardening, put dinner in the oven and then went back to check on the babies (might've been gone an hour and a half at most)...

    Silkie Chicks - Temperament

On Saturday my partner and I started our flock with 11 day old chicks and 2 silkies that are between 1 and 2 weeks old. The majority of the chicks are more than happy to be held and tend to cuddle in to us and fall asleep. They don't scatter away in their brooder when we go to pick them up, they...

    Hello from Brisbane, Australia!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Fierlin1182 I'm originally from Adelaide, moved to the Gold Coast in 2010 and have recently bought a house in Jimboomba with my partner. Shantiananda thanks - I think they're pretty cute too! My partner was playing on the ground with 2 of them a few minutes ago and...

    Breed identification day old chick

Thanks for your reply Veer67. I think she might be a buff sussex, but you're right - too hard to tell when they're this little. We have a mixture of different chicks, and the only ones I know for sure are the 2 silkies and 2 plymouth rocks.

BROODER thread! Post pics of your brooders!

We bought our chicks home yesterday morning and are so in love with them already! We have 11 day olds and 2 week olds. Our brooder at the moment is an extremely large cardboard box. When they start to get a little bigger we have another box that attaches on to make the brooder double the size. I...
