    Advice on mites please.

Approximately 10-14 days ago I went to collect eggs and when I picked one up I noticed around 10-12 small bugs (like the size of a dot made by a freshly sharpened pencil) moving around on it. The egg had a small crack and some white had leaked out, I assumed they were eating that. About 4 days...

having issues with the new coop i just finished..

Just b/c people hunt the land behind you doesn't mean the area is without predators. I hunt deer, squirrel, and turkey behind my home and am successful. Despite my activity in the woods I have pictures of foxes and coyotes on my trail camera, 40 yds from my back door and within ft of my coop...

    is this egg fertile

A little back ground. I have 13 chickens which are between 31 and 33 wks old. 12 of them have laid eggs, although 1 EE has decided to take the winter off after laying about a dozen green eggs in the late fall. I have 1 other EE who I'm fairly certain has not laid any eggs (never saw it in any...

How do you keep your nipples from freezing?

Ankhdad, yeah they are calling for 1-2 ft tonight, we really dont need it but at least its not something like a hurricane or earth quake, a little snow we can handle. The girls have a covered run and they had maybe a 1/2 inch in there, which they were not happy about.

Why would the horizontal nips work better, would i need to run that line to the nip. I have vertical nips with a 5 gal bucket and a 250watt stock tank heater the water is liquid but the nips are frozen. 12 degrees this am and they were frozen. Chickens got their first taste of snow yesterday...

3 good eggs then 3 soft eggs

After checking this am for replies i realized I never really asked a question. Is the situation I described above reason for concern or is this somewhat common among brand new layers? Thanks.

3 good eggs then 3 soft eggs

This is my first time having chickens. Of my 13 ladies 3 have started laying. One of them, an EE, started laying last tues. and gave me 3 green eggs ( she is 20wks old). They were small eggs but otherwise perfect. She then laid 2 eggs that had a white, a yolk, and a membrane but no shell...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Vader, I'm in WNY south of Buffalo, so I'd imagine we have similar winters. I will not be insulating my coop, I will keep an eye on drafts and have built shutters to block off my vents only during the worst winter storms. One of my vents is well above chicken height and protecting under a...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Built this coop from ideas i got on this site. Used the money I made from making and selling maple syrup to buy the locally sourced wood form the amish. The wood is all hemlock and larch, any wood that touches the ground is larch the rest hemlock. The coop is 5.5 ' x 8.5 ' elevated 2'. The...
