Greetings all,
Our hen is having some issues that I can't quite pinpoint for support and treatment. She started looking poorly about a week ago (comb drooped over and less active). She still kept up with the other chickens until yesterday, when my daughter found her in the coop with her legs...
We investigated vets today and the closest one that would even consider surgery (which means will even see us, given what we described above) is over an hour away without traffic (which is never the case). I actually read the document tthis morning that you posted today and started her on...
Yes to the crop check, no to the antibiotic. Not sure the issue, so I wasn't sure what to do treatment-wise. Her crop was definitely full of water (I'd say about 1 cup or more), plus a few cucumber seeds popped out when I drained it. I keep thinking impacted crop, but not sure since I've never...
HI all. I have a chicken who is a little poorly. Here are the signs/symptoms:
1) Large soft crop. No sour smell. Evacuated a lot of the water by tipping her forward. Still soft, but a lot closer to regular size.
2) Dried poopy bottom. I soaked her in a warm bath, washing her bottom and vent...
I wondered about the wood pellets. We use them in our cats' litter boxes and they work like a charm. An inch of pellets turns into about 4 inches of sawdust once it's gotten moistened. How long do the wood pellets last before you feel you need to change them out?
I agree, KatherineM. It would make for a mess for some folks in some places. Here, we are in the township and they don't much care what we do to a certain extent. We have rules, but as long as we ask for permission for something, they can usually find a way to make it work.
Reminds me of...
So, what are they going to do to those people who already have livestock (cows, sheep, chickens, goats...)? That's a LOT of backyard animals across the state.
That's good to know. We watched at the Saline TSC last year, but never saw them. I asked about them this year and they gave me the standard "we don't know what we'll get or when we'll get it". It would be nice if they did something like Hamilton's, which posts what they've already ordered...
Greetings everyone! We are on the lookout for Orpington chicks and have yet to find any that will be for sale this season from anywhere close other than Townline. We are in Saline, which is about 2.5 hrs from Zeeland. We've talked about driving out there to pick them up...only looking to get...
LOL You are too much! We in Michigan are getting a real sense of what Canada must feel like (and are now taking back all of our snide little comments, too, about their love of hockey and ham). It's hard to understand something until you've lived it! I grew up in KY and lived for years in TN...
So, if you did not sell your eggs, would you still be subject to the changes under this law? Just curious how far it will extend. I know a LOT of people who have backyard chickens here in SE Michigan (Ann Arbor area).
Seems like the same crazy laws that now govern beekeeping (specifically...
Which auto door did you get?
And...feral cats!!! We have so many around here, it's not even funny. Add that to the possums, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, hawks, etc., etc. We basically live in Predatorville! :)
We live in SE Michigan and considered the drive out to Zeeland to pick up chicks. We really have been looking locally to get some Orpingtons, but haven't had any luck. We only want 6 (or so) chicks/pullets and the minimum order online is 15-25. However, I wrote to them and asked if we did a...
Hi Linda--can you summarize what exactly is the issue with the proposed changes? They are going to let local laws trump the Right to Farm Act? I went to the two sites you listed above, but I didn't find anything specific on the first site and the second link was difficult to pick out issues...
