About 3 weeks ago, my 4 year old Buff Orpington started limping and having trouble walking. She's bad for a few days, up for a day, won't get out of the nest, then she gets to the run on her own. Often sitting with a leg sticking out, flapping her wings for balance. She eats, drinks, has no...
So, this morning I wake to a crowing rooster. I don't have a rooster, it must be the neighbor's right? Wrong. My six month old Blue Langshan is flapping "her" wings and crowing right before sunrise this morning! As I stood at the back door with my jaw slack, I thought, how could that be...
I have five 2 year old hens and just introduced three newbies (all different breeds). Once the new babies were about 4 weeks old, they were moved to the big coop, but in a smaller coop inside the big coop, so they can be outside and close the the adult hens, but not picked on until they can hold...
I have 6 hens and no rooster, so of course my eggs are not fertilized, but my Buff Orpington thinks that all the eggs must be hatched. I have two nesting boxes and one has never been used. All six hens use the same box. Never had this problem before....maybe spring is causing this behavior...
A couple of my hens have bald patches and a few mornings, their coop was full of feathers. This is my first spring with them. Do they moult this time of year? One has a weird bald patch over her leg with feather pins sticking out and blood dots, another is missing a bunch of tail feathers and...
OK, I have 6 silly hens with little pea brains! They are 11 weeks old and love to hang out at the door every morning waiting for their breakfast, they finally are not afraid of me, they scratch, take dirt baths, love treats, hen peck each other, and dig holes to nap in, they go into their hen...
I have 6 3 week old chicks. One each of Cuckoo-Marans, Buff Orpington, Dominique, Silver-Laced Wyandotte, Golden Campine and an Easter Egger. All of them are a head taller than the little Golden Campine. Is she always going to be smaller or will she catch up?
So, my 6 3-week old chicks, still in their brooder in the garage are terrified of me! I call, "chick, chick!" everytime I pass by and bring them their food and treats of lettuce and celery, but they always flip out like I'm trying to eat them. I feel guilty grabbing them to hold them, in an...
As my husband and I pondered pros and cons to where the hen house should go, I wanted it under the lemon and orange trees for easy access, wind block and it was the best option in our limited yard, he wanted to rip out the cactus briar and put it there. I told him that was a ton of horrid work...
OK, so I am getting chicks for the first time in May. We have an 18 month old yellow lab (bird hunting dog) and a 15 year old brown dog that showed her ratting ability when she was younger and still tries to catch squirrels....well, it's now futile, but the hunt instinct is still there and I'm...
Lots of questions.....
1. Do I put food and water inside their coop at night when they get shut in, as well as outside in the run, or do they just eat and drink during the day while they are out in the run and sleep at night?
2. From other posts, I gathered that I can put the oyster shells...
Do I need one nest box per hen or do they share? I plan on having only about 6 or 7 hens, how many nest boxes are needed?
Starting plans to build the coop this weekend and need to know what to do.
Thanks,
Nancy from California
Do the baby chickies get a night time or do I keep the heat lamp on them 24/7 until I'm ready to move them to the coop?
I'm a newbie, need advice.

I'm a first timer. I have yet to buy my chicks or build a coop. I'm ready for the chicks to arrive with my indoor setup, when I do order them.
I have a ton of questions and look forward to advice from the masters!
Glad to be here!
Nancy
I want the smaller bantam hens for my first go-around as a "chicken master", but I noticed that McMurray does not sex any of their bantys. Does anyone know where I could purchase banty chicks of various breeds and be guaranteed females? I'm not in a rooster-loving zone.
Thanks,
Nancy
