I've had chickens for several years & have had great results with a couple of tips I've run across over the years. For crop issues such as coughing/wheezing, as if something is stuck, I soak some pieces of bread in olive oil & give it to the chicken with the issue.
I've had multiple issues...
In case it is only something stuck in her throat causing it, I would try getting some olive oil down her to help. I've had similar issues with no discharge so found this tip somewhere. I tore up small pieces of bread soaked in olive oil & gave it to her. It stopped the issue!
Hi. Great info in this post & I will try some of the suggestions. I was wondering if your hen has had any further issues? Thanks for sharing your experience.
My hen is still eating fine & active after she passes the egg. She has been passing the yolk & whites, then a little later she passes the soft shell with what looks to be powdery buildup. She will go into hen house or under bush while this is going on. Her bottom has been very messy. I'm afraid...
Almost exact same symptoms & behaviors with my 14 mo old hen that I'm dealing with. I'm doing the same treatments as you. She seems fine once she gets the yolk & soft shell out, but I can tell she is uncomfortable & off. Are all your other hens fine? Did you notice a decline in the quality of of...
I'm having similar issues & wish I had answers. I'm afraid it's just not good. I'm trying to find situations where it was just a "phase", but not finding much.
When my injured chicken was healing I noticed the skin to be a bit green. But never any smell or oozing & she recovered amazing. We used veterycin (sp?) spray to help wound heal & fight infection. Our hens wound was deep & massive & she healed. Eating & perky are great signs. Best of luck...
Just yesterday I caught her just sitting & sleeping in the yard. Not active or scratching around. Then she squirted out yolk & egg white. Still acted uncomfortable and she had a few more squirts of this stuff. Hubby & I gave her bath in Epsom salt & some vitamins. No prolapse or other issues...
Hi. I have been searching trying to figure out if my hen has an illness. I've read about the symptoms but never together. She is an amber white, about 14 months, had been great layer. Then shell color got lighter & larger with more pointy tips. Then tops became wrinkled (over a month) then...
1st time broody mama hen & owner here. We gave our broody australorp 2 fertilized eggs as she was so determined. 1st hatched today! What an amazing process & so happy all that hard sitting paid off for our hen. 2nd egg is right behind. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.
Our girl who had the injury laid her 1st egg since the injury on Sunday!!! She laid one on Monday & Tuesday (today) also!!! So happy for her as I can now say she has fully recovered. The injury occurred on Oct 24.
Great to hear! On Sunday, our chicken laid her 1st egg since attack that occurred on Oct 24. And gave us another one Monday & today! I'd say she's fully recovered. Keep up the good work, it will pay off!
I would let her be as much as possible & not worry about her not having much activity for now, which is hard as we want to do whatever we can to help them through it. Based on my experience, the first few days were pretty mellow with little activity. Drinking & eating even just a little is a...
Thanks! Great ideas. Appreciate experienced/expert advice. We are new to chickens & I will probably question everything as I figure these fun new pets out. Breed of chicken is Amber White, age is just over 8 months, so no molt yet. Have used pine shavings since they were chicks, but I agree, can...
Hi! Sorry about your hen, but I think you are on the right track. The waiting for recovery is the hardest. We had a hen with a nasty back wound. I am still amazed at how she healed. Below is a link to my experience that I posted hoping it would help others. I will say that I was super impressed...
I've been reading lots of posts, but not finding much that nails down my issue. About 4 days ago, I came home to a hen with wheezing sounds & seemed to be struggling breathing. No other issues such as eye or nasal discharge. She was scratching around & acting completely normal. About 4 hours...
