    Swollen Eye Hen

Okay so, my neighbor has a few gems and I noticed the other day that one of her hens eyelids was HUGE. So I grabbed this photo: Anybody have a clue as to what's up with her? The lump is hard and it doesn't seem to hurt her when you touch it.

    Hen wheezing slightly

Thank you guys for the help. At least next time, if something happens to one of my other girls, I'll be more prepared. She'll have medication the second she get's sick.

    Hen wheezing slightly

I ended up giving her 1 1/2 tbsp, which was a little more than I was going to give her originally, unfortuantely though, she did not make it. Her first day on antibiotics made her a lot better! Her wheezing subsided, but then out of the blue, she kicked it. I gave her new water on the second...

    Hen wheezing slightly

Thanks for all the help. :) I bought some Oxytetracycline powder. All feed stores are closed on Sunday except for one, which just so happened to be out of Tylan. It also says to give her 200-400mg/gal of meds for Infectious Synovitis caused by Mycoplasma synoviae 400-800mg/gal for CRD and...

    Hen wheezing slightly

I looked at a photo of wet pose and it showed a yellow mucusy tongue and a sore face. She does not have either of those. No obstructions in the throat as far as I can see, but I'm also not very well versed in chicken diseases. I'll try to take a photo. Again though, I did put my face up against...

    Hen wheezing slightly

Thank you, I'll go get some Tylan for her today. Do I need to give my other chickens anything? They don't have moldy food, I check it frequently because I had a mold incident once a very long time ago. Also, she isn't leaking. Her nose and mouth are not runny at all. No signs of discharge, just...

    Hen wheezing slightly

Her mouth is opened slightly when she makes the sounds. She is now making more of a gurgling sounds. Similar to the one we make when we get a nasty wet flu. I checked down her throat and didn't see anything. I put my ear to her chest and it sounded wet when she was breathing.

    Hen wheezing slightly

I've been trying to look this up for the past 2 days now and have either stumbled upon conditions that seem WAAAY worse, or people who have had their issues resolved by random stopping or chicken death. So, my chicken has been wheezing for the past couple of days, it started 2 nights ago. She...

5 Month Old Chicken, Pretty Sure It's A He.

Yeah... I know they do, she just came to me with a bunch of normal looking fluffy faced pea combed ees so I just call her that. :P she's the odd one out. Glad everyone just thinks she's a pullet! Here's a picture of her sister by the way, which is mainly why I was confused about sex, theirs a...

    Arizona Chickens

I have a "starters" variety of laying chickens. :P Barred Rocks, RIRs and EEs. They Eggers don't really like laying in the Summer heat, but have always laid massive eggs when they get the chance! The Barred Rocks seem to do the best for me, they haven't had a single health problem and are very...

4 Month old Orpington.....Boy or girl? *UPDATED* New pictures!

Looks like a Lady Fluff Butt to me! :P I've had an Orpington Roo before and he did a whole lot to show off him manliness by walking a little taller and straighter. Plus, she's got that fluff butt! Have you ever seen a butt so fluff on a chicken that's not a Cochin?! It's like a fancy dress!

5 Month Old Chicken, Pretty Sure It's A He.

Hello once again BYC! I have a [somewhat] serious dilemma [i think]. I rescued 3 EE's from an abandoned lot about 2 months ago, the chickens were the same size as my 3 month old Sultans, so I'm assuming they were about 3 mo at the time. ANYWAYS, one of the chickens, who I've named Melee, is...

    Heat Stroke Questions

I'm very concerned about my chickens health here in Phoenix AZ. The summers keep getting hotter and hotter (last summer wasn't as dreadful for them) and I don't want to have all of my chickens die of heat stroke. So, I have a few questions: 1) What are the symptoms of heat stroke in chickens? 2)...

Hen picking out her own feathers

It's really difficult to say since chickens are seen as a cheap commodity (not by BYC, of course :) ) instead of an animal, so not a lot of research is done on their behalf. But from looking at other birds plucking behaviors I would say she has trichotillomania.

Hen picking out her own feathers

I've only seen plucking in my chickens when they were going broody. I'm thinking that maybe if she isn't broody and doesn't have a disease that maybe she has a mental disorder? I know that a lot of birds pluck compulsively and maybe she's just one of those guys. It could be from stress, although...

What are the symptoms of bird flu in chickens?

If you think your chickens have the virus, you're supposed to contact your local agriculture department or the USDA. Again, I really hope your girls are okay. My biggest fear has been my girls getting the flu because their is no cure for it. Mild strains can pass unnoticed, but severe ones, like...

What are the symptoms of bird flu in chickens?

Avian influenza doesn't generally show symptom until it's too late. Your chickens may become lethargic (with a moderate strain), they'll eat a lot less and egg production will slow, they will have a hard time breathing, and they might be a little ruffled looking. Pretty much like how we are with...

    Severely Injured Chicken, Please Help!

Now that you've said it, I think that might have been the case. She died a little bit ago. I'm going too see if I can get a biopsy on her to figure out the cause so it doesn't harm any of my other birds. Thank you so much for answering my questions.
