When will my GLW lay eggs

I agree with old grey mare. With pure breeds 16 is the earliest I would even expect eggs with most breeds. They don't even recommend switching to layer feed until after 16 weeks. But unfortunately wyandottes mature slowly you have a while. Sometimes taking up to 28-32 weeks

    Researching into breeding my chickens

It does help a lot! I love the chocolate eggs so the welsummer mix is tempting. My welsummer lays dark eggs with really dark specks. I am also looking at the color plumage the barred gene would make with different hens. I have seen cuckoo maran with red barred and buff barred that were pretty...

    Researching into breeding my chickens

I have 22 chickens total (2 roosters and rest hens). Several breeds of hens! I got several distinguishable breeds so my daughters could tell them apart and name them. I wanted them interested and learning! Breeds i currently have of hens are New Hampshire Red, Ameraucana, Welsummer, Black Jersey...

    Rescued chickens not laying

I could try that. I have chick grower w/ 20% for my younger birds. I could mix it in with normal feed

    Rescued chickens not laying

The feed I use has 16% protein. They free range 2-8 hours a day depending on if I'm off or work. It has seemed to be a very good combo for my original flock of layers. I have 5 (3 NH feeds, 1 wellsummer & 1 ameraucana) and I normally average 4 eggs a day

    Rescued chickens not laying

Thank you! I will check that out too. If it is something as simple as lack of nutrition it will fix itself in a few days. I currently have 5 very consistent layers that always have plenty of food. They 5 have taken new girls in without issue

    Rescued chickens not laying

According to original owner the beaks were obviously trimmed when bought as pullets. Probably not from an upstanding breeder. I will watch closely but the rock has given no indication that the beak had slowed her down. I fully expected them to take some time to adjust before laying in my coop...

    Rescued chickens not laying

So this week someone asked me if I wanted 3 hens (2 gold laced Wyandotte and 1 barred rock). His reasoning was they weren't laying and they should have a long time ago. Come to find out they are all about 8 months old. They all look full grown with full combs and wattle. They look pure bred but...

the hard to ID yellow chick

Well I am beginning to think this little chick is/was a white leg horn. At 9 weeks she is the same height as my red stars but starting to look a lot leaner. Everyone keeps saying look at her eat lobes to see if she's a LH or a white rock.... This has gone over about as well as Russian...

    Rouen Duck thread

I have 2 Rouens ( 1 drake 1 hen) about 9 weeks old. Definately able to tell the difference but drake hasnt started to molt. They started out in brooder in house then brooder outside. Now they have a dog run with kiddy pool and dog house for shelter in the dog run. I want them to free range but...

    Does quack always mean hen?

Thanks. I have read of vent sexing, voice sexing and then feathers when they come in. Just didn't know if the voice was full proof. I have even read that the drakes that even do make a noise that sounds like a quack that it is never loud. Something about their vocal chords being different where...

    Does quack always mean hen?

I have my first two 8 week old ducks. Two either mallards or rouens from TSC. I am almost 100% sure one is a drake. He is very quiet and barely peeps loud enough to hear. Plus he has the start of a drake feather. His counterpart has the exact same coloring up until this point and same size...

    "day old" pullets from TSC

I guess that's the only responses. So either everyone else agrees or doesn't know. LOL

the hard to ID yellow chick

White rock wouldn't be bad either I guess. That would go with all the other brown egg layers I have. They get bigger than leg horns but I hear they lay pretty good.

the hard to ID yellow chick

Got this chick from the assorted pullet bin at TSC. I believe we have been able to determine done of the others were red stars. The chicks in question now are very fine light yellow first feathers. I included pictures of feet, head, back and profile. I was hoping for a white leg horn but they...

    "day old" pullets from TSC

I got 6 total chicks. Two with markings like this. They were supposedly sexed and we're in the bin for egg production pullets. I looked at wellsummer and brown leghorn but doesn't appear to have enough brown on its back. Any ideas?
