I can't rule out the heat, she was occasionally panting--though yesterday was far from the worst this summer has offered.
I went through the feathers, nothing visible. I've had mites in the past, so I know what to look for at the base of the features.
I've never de-wormed them, but I move the...
I've been keeping backyard chickens for 5 or 6 years. So I've seen a few things, but am not yet an expert.
Today I noticed my barred rock pullet was acting oddly, she kept slowing laying down, like she couldn't stay awake, while her friends of her generation were still being active and lively...
Well, I asked for a barred plymoth pullet, but I think I got a clerk that didn't know anything about chickens.
The black bird in the following pictures is about 3 months old, and while obviously not done growing, is nearly as big as my grown rock and australorps. I'm hopping it is a jersy...
I don't know anything for sure, but she does look a lot like the black sex link pics i've seen. The black one is about 40% larger than the yellow, even though their feather have come in almost exactly the same.
As long as it is hardy and a good layer, it's OK, i was just hoping for a...
Yeah, that occurred to me today. The wing feathers coming out are all black except for a few white ones by the wrist. I hope it's a good layer whatever it is.
Is it possible the other isn't a Rhode Island Red? I haven't seen a picture of one that has the tan and black patterns on the wing...
I go a couple new chicks. The help at the store couldn't tell me how old they were besides "at least two weeks", i suspect they are quite a bit older. Can you help me narrow down their age? Thanks!
The black one is a barred Plymouth Rock, and the brown a Rhode Island Red. The black is quite...
We have a broody hen who should be ready to accept chicks in two weeks. I'd like to give her two or three chicks to raise (any more and the coop will start to be overcrowded). But the farm supply stores i know of that sell chicks have stopped for the year. I don't want to deal with straight...
And the two are indeed roosters. They started crowing yesterday. For now they are in a dog crate in the basement-- i think i have a home lined up for them.
Chickens aren't legal, though we are sort of grandfathered in due to the fact that we got ours when the statute was unclear or contradictory. We really want to avoid drawing negative attention to our chickens however, the situation isn't entirely certain.
Thanks for the tip about crowing...
Drat!
What are the chances that since they haven't started crowing yet, they aren't going to start? We have too many neighbors, too close for Cock-a-doodle-do.
Late this fall i got a few partly grown chicks from a casual local breeder. He keeps several kinds together, but mostly Silkies and Easter Eggers, but has been breeding for several generations, and there may be more in the mix. I don't know exactly how old they are. I'm concerned that the two...
