    Best temperature to store eggs?

We are getting an insane amount of eggs this year and, since I only sell them once a week, I am setting up a mini refrigerator just for the eggs. Does anyone know the optimal temperature to maintain freshness? Also, at this temperature, how long are the eggs still fresh and able to be sold...

Keeping a barn cat in the chicken coop?

This past year the rats have been pretty bad in our chicken house. I don't want to poison them though because we have several dogs and other animals that I defiinately do not want to have access to poison and i don't want to maintain traps. There is a program in our area that provides people...

Help! How do I perk up a sick chick?

Yesterday we recieved our 25 chicks from mcmurray. All 25 arrived alive but one has been acting strange. It sleeps all the time and when it does it lays its legs all the way out like chicks look when they die . Is there anything I can do for it? Is it worth trying? It seems to be going down...

My chicks started hatching yesterday around 5pm, (It is currently 3:48 pm the next day). So far I have 10/14 eggs hatched. 4 were EE eggs and the rest were brown. For some reason all of the brown eggs have hatched and none of the green/olive eggs have even pipped yet. Is there a reason for this...

I have had the most annoying time with my humidity since lockdown. Today is day 19. For the last 18 days, the humidity stayed at 50% with NO water added AT ALL. 50% was the lowest I could get it. Yesterday when I went into lockdown, I filled only one of the 2 channels in my octagon 20. This...

    Humidity question

I have set up my incubator in preparation for some eggs. What is the humidity supposed to be? It has been running for two days with a steady temperature but the humidity has stayed about 52% with NO water in it. If I put eggs in, will the humidity go down naturally? Thanks for the help

ideal breeds for a colorful egg basket?

I don't know about you, but when I see eggs at the store I am dissapointed by their lack of variety. You can buy white or brown but either way they are the same size shape and color. So my idea for my FFA project was to give people the opportunity for a colorful egg basket. I was wondering...

    Calling Llama Experts!

My family has been breeding llamas for a few years now. We choose all of our breeders for their height, health, how flat their backs are, and the classic coat. Last year we bred our females in May for an April birth. The problem we are now having is the decision on whether or not to shear them...

    Guinea eggs vs. chicken eggs?

The last two days I have gone out to collect the eggs and found an egg that looks like it came from a bantam hen- I don't have any bantam hens. I do, however have a pair of guineas. The hen should probably be about laying age... Is it possible that these are her eggs? I have not seen guinea eggs...

How long can eggs sit before they aren't able to be incubated?

I am getting ready to set some eggs but would like to accumulate as many eggs as possible. I have 8 hens but only recieved 5 eggs today due to the weather. My question is, how many days do I have to collect eggs before some of them are no longer viable? Sorry if this does not make sense, Thanks

    Hen to Rooster Ratio?

I recently ordered a batch of 2 dozen chicks from mcmurray (All supposedly pullets) and was wondering how many roosters I would need to maintain good fertility while not over breeding them. These chicks will be part of an FFA project and I would like fertility to be good enough that I can sell...

To cage or not to cage?

As a project for my FFA class, I am going to be raising laying hens. We are in the process of altering a large stall (12X16) in our barn into a coop. I have always let my chickens free range on our 5 acres during the day. I love looking out at our lawn and seeing my hens picking about for bugs...
