Thank you all so much. As you can see, I haven't been back on for a while. It was very hard for me. I still get teary eyed thinking about him. I had grown very attached to Elvis and really, really wanted him to be OK. I've come to terms with the fact that I did everything possible for him...
It absolutely breaks my heart to inform everyone that Elvis has left the building.
He was doing so great when I last posted (my husband never did send me the pic from his phone) and then he developed an upper respiratory infection. I can only assume it's because the Prednisone knocked his...
So, we've been going absolutely crazy around here with that litter of pups. One had to have surgery for a prolapsed anus a few days ago. Operating on very few hours of sleep waiting for a foster to take them. Plus we've all been sick for 3 days.
The good news ---- Elvis is CROWING!!!!!
He...
Well, since I don't have a flock I guess that won't be a problem.
As I've stated I have approx. 3 week old chicks that are in a brooder. They wouldn't be integrated with Elvis until they are 4-5 months old -- which is 3-4 months away.
The rest of the poultry on my 4 acre property belong to...
We have never vaccinated our poultry before. In 5 years of having dozens and dozens of birds we never had a sick one. 2005 was the last time I had large numbers including geese, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens and roosters. Mmm, I did have 1 rainbow lorikeet as well. We had one rooster on...
There are only 2 other hens right now. They came with the property. The owner of the property did drop off 21 chicks about a month ago (some of which I think are roosters), but they are still confined as they are too young to be running around.
I have 5 Buff Orpington chicks my husband got...
So busy yesterday. We have an emaciated nursing mother in and we are weaning the pups. Plus I had to go into town and that is an hour just in travel time. By last night I was so bushed I didn't post.
But, great news. Elvis is eating and drinking completely on his own now. I gave him chick...
Elvis had a wonderful day!
I changed his enclosure yesterday. It's not as long but it's wider and taller. Since he's been starting to stand I wanted to give him head room and I also wanted him to have more room to maneuver.
I'm also now taping layers of towels in so he can't slide them out...
He's doing even better this afternoon than he was this morning. He's been preening quite a bit and he ate AND drank on his own. He's looking around and checking everything out while he talks and talks and talks. No crowing yet but I'm looking forward to it.
He's standing almost constantly...
I cover Elvis at night so there are no drafts or anything. I lifted his cover this morning and he was standing there preening himself. My husband ran over and said - "I do believe Elvis is checking out of the Heartbreak Hotel."
He's taking a couple steps and then he wobbles and falls, but he...
Never in a million years! Even my husband just shook his head at me.
I think Elvis is WAY better than when he got here. My husband has been very skeptical and keeps telling me not to get my hopes up, but even he had to admit tonight that Elvis is showing definite improvement. He ate some...
Well, I think the dehydration issue has been resolved. 72 hours ago his poop was like soft modeling clay with little to no smell - hence my concern about his fluid intake. I held off on either the tubing or the SC fluids since he drank a little on his own yesterday. I was just getting ready...
Elvis actually decided to eat and drink a little on his own today. He also stood unassisted several times.
At breakfast he kept kicking so I put my hand under his feet. He wrapped his toes around my hand and proceeded to perch there and started eating. When I went to put him back in his...
Wow. That's a lot of good info. Thank you. My husband is the medical procedure guy so I'll have him read all that over. It sounds to me like under the skin will be the most non-invasive and he's not critical so actual venous fluids don't sound proper. I read the info below posted by an ICU...
Thank you Bogtown Chick for your kind words and your well wishes. I don't consider myself noble though. I'm only doing what I consider decent and right.
My husband and I run a rescue rehab facility for dogs. We take in the neglected, abused, hoarding situation, etc. dogs and rehabilitate...
I'm looking at the links and they're very helpful. Thank you. It does seem to be what he has and there's a section on the blog post about Polish being susceptible to it after a good peck in the head. I just wish the people who had him before had known and kept him segregated from the bigger...
I currently only have 2 hens, a roo, and 5 peepers. However, I used to have dozens - I'm working my way back up to that. lol
My current roo is named Elvis. I've only had him for 3 1/2 days. I'm trying to nurse him back to health after he was attacked by another roo at his previous...
You bet. I'll take a pic of him in the morning and post it.
I hold him and he hangs there like he's dead except his head is moving as he looks at stuff.
He'll be eating and then he goes still, his eyes close and his head sinks. If you give him about 5-10 seconds he'll shake his head like...
He does have a twisted neck - at least it seems like it. His head leans to the left and down. He can pick his head up and look around but when he relaxes it sink back down and to the left.
He's eating great but he's stopped drinking. We've been giving him plenty of fluids with the syringe...
