When friend arrived with guns, the coons in the coop were gone. The one in the trap was dispatched of with a .22. I guess we may have to go about taking care of this problem 1 by 1. Thanks for your help.
Long story short, we've had a terrible problem with raccoons killing my chickens. They actually broke a plexiglass run door to get in and kill my chickens. My chickens free range and will (wisely) no longer go in the coop at night so the door just stays open so they can lay eggs and eat/water as...
Thank you! I think so too. Raising chicks is such a funny business with its highs and lows. Right after they arrived, we lost *7* and I was devastated! Now it's so rewarding to have them getting to be full grown and starting to get a few more eggs again.

Thanks for your input. It's so exciting finally getting help to figure out what they are. #1, I couldn't get a great look as her comb is fairly small.

#1 I have 3 who are identical, from what I've...
This spring, I had one chick that didn't grow as quickly as the others, fell way behind. She had a lot of issues with pasty butt. Once she got a little older and quit pasting up, she finally caught back up with her sisters and now I can't even tell them apart.
I'm an animal optimist, I guess. I had one small chick that I felt like had constant problems with pasty butt and was much smaller than her "sibs". After a while, the pasty butt cleared up and she's caught up with the others and is fine. So I like to give them every chance. I also had another...
We have both kinds. We started out with the plastic one but discovered we needed the metal one in the winter. DH built a warmer base that works like a charm to keep the water from freezing in the winter but it must be the metal waterer on it.
My family went on a brief getaway to a more rural part of Ohio this week. We drove by some different rundown places with a number of roosters in individual small runs with small shelters. Am I wrong in thinking they're raising roosters for fighting or do people raise them like this for 4H or...
