Hawk Shield!!! After having several deadly incidents, involving either red-tail hawks, owls, or falcons with my chickens, I decided I could no longer let my chickens free range without patrolling right by their sides. Working and other time commitments made this impossible except occasionally on...
My coop is finally finished with the run attached. My 8 chicks are just 9 weeks old and love being outside in the run and digging around for bugs. I plan on keeping the coop door open at all times and let them go in and out of the run as they please. Don't worry thought, I made the run very...
I completely agree with you!..which is why I plan on free ranging them most of the time. I haven't even bought the materials yet but I'm putting a 2000 sq tf fence around the coop and when I have time to keep an eye on them I'll let them out of the fence to roam my backyard. The run is just for...
Started this coop about a month ago and it should hold comfortably 6 hens. I've got quite a bit more work to do with the roof and I need to make a run that will attach to the side of the coop.
Haha luckily it's short enough that it will fit under the garage door but it is going to be very heavy. It's probably gonna be a few hundred pounds when it's done but I plan on having 3 other guys help me carry it about a hundred yards to the back yard. It'll be a hard, but manageable:)
Thanks everyone! The roof will probably extend over about 2 inches on each side and then it will probably be shingled. Feel free to toss out more advice, I appreciate it!:) this is the inside view
This is the first time I've built a coop, and I'm planning on getting around 6 chickens to put in it in the spring. I started designing this on an engineering software and started building it 2 weeks ago. It's coming along!
Well hopefully the chickens don't have a problem with the stream. The only problem I'd have is it will freeze over in the winter but other than that it flows all year. I'm also hoping the new stream will attract bugs that the hens can snack on in the summer. Thanks for the answer!:)
I drew them up using an engineering software called CAD pro through my school. It's a software that I took classes to learn so it's hard to get good at and the software itself costs money:/ I'm currently working on a more detailed model. The software is like online LEGO's for adults..I can give...
I'd probably just reroute it so it connected back with itself down a ways, that way overall the water flow isn't affected and most of the original creek doesn't go dry. I'll just have to do some testing with it once it warms up!:) and the legal part? That never even crossed my mind haha, But I...
The water is pretty clear once the dirt settles. It comes from an underwater spring and I don't live near any farming so it wouldn't be contaminated by livestock means. You're probably right in having an alternative water source in a container, I just liked the creek idea because it meant I...
I have a creek on my property that runs pretty level to the forest floor so it's easy for me to reroute the creek with just a shovel and hoe. If I rerouted the creek to run through my chicken run would this be a good source of water for them? And would they use it? I took a picture to show the...
Thanks for the input! The linked helped a lot! I also have the option to reroute a creek in my backyard to flow through where the chickens would range close to the coop. Would it be worth it to do this? Would the chickens use it as a water source?
