    Adequate ventilation?

Thanks for your reply, Chickendigger. I could put a piece of wood hanging on hinges if I wanted to be able to close them up. And I've already thought that they might need a fan come August. But I've read that we need a square foot of ventilation per bird in the winter months to prevent...

    LOTS of feed being wasted

I tied a string around the neck of the jar, then looped 4 stings through the first one and spread them equidistantly (is that even a word?) around the "neck string". Then I brought them up and around to tie them together at the bottom of the jar (which is the top when it's upside down). Use...

    INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

H, neighbors! I'm Laura and I live in Porter, IN. When DH and I bought a house here, we had plenty of friends already living here and a few of them also had chickens. I was told we could keep up to 6. So I got 6 :). But now I've learned that isn't exactly true :(. And, of course, aside from...

What religion do you belong to?

Atheist here, with a strong interest in the Church of Sustainability, where keeping chickens is kin to prayer. Lol! "Chickenism for the win!" Imagine if local ordinances could be changed to allow backyard chickens based on a "religious freedom" argument...

Pavers- can skunks dig under them?

I've read that an 8"-12" wide skirt will deter diggers, so I would think a 12"-16" wide paving stone would do the same. I really hope so anyway, since that's how I'm securing the perimeter of my run. This is my first coop though, so we'll see. Mostly, I'm relying on my coop being totally...

    Adequate ventilation?

I forgot to mention - I have 6 pullets :) These were taken just a week ago. The trees are so much greener now!! :)

    Adequate ventilation?

My coop is a converted tool shed. It's about 8ft wide by 12 or so feet long and is 7ft high at the peak. The back half is partitioned off for the girls and the front half is used for storage. I have two return air vents that are 10"x14" at the front and back. As you can see here, the...

Can I get some Chicken help?

They turn garbage into protein! If her family gardens - whatever garbage the chickens don't turn into protein, they turn into nutrient rich compost! They're like cute, little, feathered employees that work for scratch ;)

Is it too early/cold to move my 4 week old chicks to the garage?

UPDATE: They've been in the garage now for a couple days and they seem very happy with the extra space :). I bought the doghouse linked in OP, drilled a hole in the roof to thread the heat lamp cord through and then took a door off the cage and butted it up against the dog house. The dog house...

Is it too early/cold to move my 4 week old chicks to the garage?

Thanks, aart, I will. We don't use the garage for cars, so we won't be opening the overhead door or choking them out with fumes :). They adjusted to 68 degrees very quickly. I'm hoping to get them set up by the weekend.

Is it too early/cold to move my 4 week old chicks to the garage?

Thanks so much, Flockwatcher! That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I just turned off the heat lamp to see how they'll like it. Once they're good with the ambient temp in my house, I'll start testing the heat lamp in the garage. And thanks so much for the link! Your reply has been a...

Is it too early/cold to move my 4 week old chicks to the garage?

Hi, I'm new to raising chickens. I live in northern Indiana and we are still only averaging 20 degree days. I have 6 chicks that are about a month old and are brooding in my house (2 of each - buff orpington, barred rock and ameraucana). I'm brooding them in a dog crate that is still...
