    MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

1st new baby hatched tonight. 8 others due in the next couple of days, 3 with pips and rocking and chirping. Can't wait to have mallards again. We lost ours early this year to evil predators. Will be keeping these babies in a vault! Pics to come soon.

    Just ordered hatching eggs

Thank you. The kids and I can't wait. The husband will find out soon.... Everything is hatching around us so it seemed like the right time to start over. I will be going all out to make sure our outdoor pen is safe for these guys when we get to that point.

    Just ordered hatching eggs

Okay, so I lost my pet mallards recently but am ready to start again. I ordered some mallard hatching eggs from Metzer Farms which is where I got our original mallard eggs. I will be building fort Knox to keep these babies safe once they move to the yard. I'm still sick about losing our mama...

Anyone know if I have males or females

I'm not an expert on ducks by any means but I know with my mallards they easiest way to tell was by their voice. The females have a loud quack and the males have a quick raspy quack. Of course once they mature you can tell by the coloring.

Lost all of my ducks last night :(

Thanks all. I guess I thought after so long with no problems that our pen was safe. They predator got in at the only place that didn't have a wood or thick metal mess. My oldest daughter checked on them at 12:30 and they were fine. By 6 am they were gone. My kids are sad, I'm sad, I had no...

Lost all of my ducks last night :(

I live in a neighborhood so we aren't too concerned about bears. We do have raccoons and foxes though. Our mom and dad ducks had been in this pen for almost a year with no problems. I guess once the predators realized they were there all bets were off. I did find mama but none of the babies...

Lost all of my ducks last night :(

Thanks, we have a big chocolate lab and he did go out and bark a lot last night. He lives in the house though so he couldn't protect them :( I think it was probably nasty raccoons. They get in my trash all the time. I may go postal on them tonight and sit out there with a pellet gun.... my...

Lost all of my ducks last night :(

So, Mama duck and her babies had finally become friends. I moved the babies to the outside pen with her and they were all happy. On Saturday night one baby disappeared. I saw some evidence that something had gotten it through the pen and pulled it out somehow. My babies are almost as big as...

    One baby missing an eye

Oddly, the duck with the damaged eye has healed. All seem to have perfectly fine eyes at this point. The 2 who went off to college will be back Friday so I will have to reintroduce them to their siblings. I hope that goes smoothly. I haven't brought mother in to see the babies in a few days...

    Post your Duck names!

Our mother duck is Bryce Harper (had no idea that she was a she when she hatched) We call her Bryce. Babies are Alex, Taylor, Sammy, Squirt, Riley, and Al. We tried to pick names that would work for male or females. If Al is a girl, she will become Allie.

    One baby missing an eye

I keep them separate. We bring mom in the house and let her look at them through the clear box they are in. She seems interested in their chirps. Hopefully we can get her acclimated to them before too long. I'd like to get them out of the house once it warms up and I'm in FL so cool weather...

    One baby missing an eye

Hello, I just hatched 6 ducklings from my female mallard's first batch of eggs. I was eager to put the last chick in with the others and am afraid now that I put him with the others too soon. he wasn't completely dry and fluffed up but the box his siblings are in is so warm I thought he'd be...
