July 21:
We spent the weekend scraping the paint off the siding, to keep the chips from falling into the dirt or on us. A home lead paint kit gave a positive result (no surprise, really). Working in humid, 90 plus degrees with a face mask on is not fun!
Layer after layer we find rot and...
So it's day four-ish today (July 13), a lot of this work is just a few hours at a time so it's getting hard to count. We found that under the corrugated metal roofing, there were very old cedar shingles. Unfortunately they could not be saved. DH figures they were 30+ years old before the metal...
My hubby and I have decided that we would like to keep chickens on our farmstead, and there was already a coop on our property. We were excited to start this year, but upon a thorough inspection of the existing building, we found it would not quite meet our needs. So the chickens will have to...
Thanks for all the responses.
This will be our second Spring on this property. Year #1 was dedicated to vegetable gardening and home improvement projects.
My plan is to use deep litter rather than installing a floor, but I will be sure to check the grade surrounding the building once I get...
Below are some pictures of my chicken coop, it came with the house. It needs some serious work, but I was curious about the below grade floor, because I've never seen anything like it.
When you open the door to the coop you have to step down about a foot. I've included some pictures that show...
I'm a Young Timer / First Timer but I am looking to use traditional methods. I have an old coop on my property that looks a bit like yours that I'm planning to fix up this spring. It also has a below-grade floor, which I found rather curious.
I was not able to find much information about coops...
And just because I was outside with my camera, here's the barn:
It needs a person-sized door so we don't have to use that crappy garage door every time we want in or out. Right now it just holds our ATV (AKA snow plow) so it hasn't been an issue.
This is the picture of the stall I would...
Thanks Kelsie, super helpful and I've "subscribed" to that thread you recommended.
I went out to the coop to take some pictures to show you, and found it is in fact a poured foundation. If it was poured at the same time as the house, it would be about 85 years old.
Outside:
Inside...
This coop is old, maybe 50+ years, which makes me exceptionally curious about it. It has a cinderblock foundation which we'll probably dig down in a spot or two to see how deep it really goes. I'll post pictures on here one day to get some thoughts. My husband's theory is that it's just been...
Hi there,
Not yet a chicken owner, but I am looking to start this Spring.
At present, I am a little intimidated from all of the things I would like to do and the level of expense that will all require, from chick-starting equipment to feeders and waterers for my adult birds, fencing and/or...
My husband and I have been loosely following the "Primal" diet for 2-3 years now. When he first started on the diet, he lost more than 50 lbs. in about six months and hasn't gained it back!
Part of why I am looking to raise chickens is for the higher quality of meat and eggs, without...
Last year when I called the Grand Forks store, I believe they said never before April or they'd arrive as "chickicles" haha.
Where abouts in ND are you?
