Hey - we just incubated our first hatch of chicks and one chick is very lethargic and has a black spot on her belly.
Any ideas?
Here are a couple of pics:
All of the other chicks are happy, eating, driking and chirping - this one does not seem interested in food or water.
Hey - so we incubated our first chicks and have one that has is lethargic and has a black spot or lump on her belly somewhere around where I would assume her belly button would be. She was hatched Saturday.
Any ideas?

Everyone else is doing well - running around...
We used to allow ours to free range during the day but they were pulling all of the mulch from our flower beds (as chickens do while looking for bugs) and were not very friendly with our vegetable garden. Also they ventured out of our 4 acres on both sides to our neighbors yards. I did not...
I have not tried this but I would think that you would be able to tell in a very similar way that you can tell if an egg is hard boiled. Lay it on its side on a flat surface and try to spin it like a top. If it spins then it is frozen or hard boiled and if it does not then it is still thawed...
I am also thinking Minorca. Where did you get him from? The reason I ask is because I got two of the same from Meyers in a Rainbow Pullet mix back in June.
I also have a cross beaked EE hen that I have had for quite a while. I was told to make sure that the crumbles are at least 1 inch deep so that she could get some food. I don't feed her from any special feeder either. Usually she is the first one to climb on top of the open top feeders while...
I sell them to folks at work for $2/dz. Most of the people here were buying organic eggs for $4-6/dz. Mine aren't officially organic in any way, I feed them Dumor feed from TSC and our compost pile is adjacent to their penned area and they are cage free.
My wife also sells them on Facebook to...
Thanks for the quick response.
I am planning on using it to get the chicks out of our homeschool room. My wife is complaining about the dust and smell . They will eventually move in with the other chickens once they get more the same size. At that point I will either use it for more chicks...
I have been interested in building a chicken tractor but have a simple question that anyone with one should be able to answer.
Does the bottom of your chicken tractor run have wire mesh or is it open to the ground?
The reason I ask is, when you lift the tractor wouldn't the chickens (1)...
That looks very much like my rooster although mine has feathers on his legs. I have come to the conclusion that mine was a mutt but a great protector of the flock and father to some new baby chicks.
Sorry about that I should have been more specific. Rainbow chicks were a special from Meyer. They are supposed to be all pullets that lay various colored eggs - white, blue/green and brown - all in the same purchase of 25 chicks for $25. I couldn't turn it down.
Everyone - thanks for your...
I received 25 rainbow chicks from Meyer Hatchery on June 8th. I need help figuring out what they are:
#1 - green legs
#2 - Black legs
#3 - White legs
#4 - Yellow legs
#5 - Black legs
#6 - Yellow legs
#7 - Yellow legs with black on the front ()
#8 - Green legs
Let me...
I have to agree with everyone else here and suggest closing off that space along the bottom of your building. I had some indian runners laying under their house at one time and it was not pretty to clean out - rotten eggs and lots of bedding material.
I also wanted to comment, your setup looks...
Just a thought. Right now Meyers Hatchery has a special going - 25 rainbow layers for $25. They really could be any standard breed - brown/blue/white egg layers. It's a great way to get a variety at a very great price.
Originally we had our ducks and chickens in separate coops and runs. Recently we moved and combines them to a large run area and the two coops are in that combined area. The ducks are actually taking a liking to the chicken coop and everyone cohabitates well. The water stays outside in the...
