The supplied thermometer is a glass one. I had never heard of the ice test so I looked it up and will try that for calibration. I think I will purchase a fan for the next hatch. It can only make it improve. I hate to see chicks that pip and do not make it. Thanks for the info.

I forgot to mention that I was using two thermometers. The one that was supplied with the incubator reads 104 while the other reads an average of 99. I was hoping that the true temp was around 101. I let the 99 average thermometer jump to 100-101 on a previous hatch and only got about a 40%...

I am jumping in a little late on this thread, but it is what I was looking for. I have the little giant still are incubator from TS and get a consistent 75% to 80% hatch rate including the few I loose when candling. The last hatch I lost 2 during candling 3 lost that pipped but did not hatch 3...

She is one or two years old not sure. I have been checking the poo in the coop and haven't found any sign of parasites, They were wormed last year.

I have a hen that has gotten lethargic and has vent feathers that are getting covered with sticky poo. Had the same thing happen to another hen several months ago. Lost that hen after several weeks. All other chickens are fine. Any ideas what is wrong and how to handle it.

I usually begin to hear chirping coming from the eggs late on day 19 and hatching begins early on on day 20 and lasts until day 21. I have never had any go until day 22.

Update on chicken hatch. 24 healthy chicks. Lost on during pipping, one after hatch, and the other one died during embryo staged. I think that is a pretty good hatch rate. I had originally set 33 eggs. After candling I found one that had a blood ring and the others I don't think were fertile...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I didn't know if it would bother the other eggs getting knocked around by the hatched chicks. I had 25 eggs on incubator, 3 have hatched and all but 2 have pipping.

I am using the same incubator that you are. I used another thermometer along side the one that was supplied. The supplied thermometer read 104 while the other that I used read 99 to 99.5. Out of 25 eggs, 3 have hatched and all the others except 2 have pipped. Day 20. I would suggest using...

How long should I leave a chick in the incubator that has hatched. Other chicks are still hatching. Should they be left in incubator until they are completely dry?

Thanks for the info. Still a little dumbfounded. The buffs and barred rock hens are the same age, so I don't think pullets would be the problem. Haven't lost any today, maybe we are past the problem.

I hatched buff orpingtons and barred rocks together. All the buffs have survived but I am losing the barred rocks. Any suggestions.
