I received these 6 chicks from a school hatch. They were incubated in the classroom, but were never stuck under a heat lamp. They are a week old. My living room temp is about 65 degrees, right now they are outside. No pasty butt, no shivering...healthy chicks....weird!
I provided shade...

We have serious weather here right now. It's only -30 C but with a wind chill it's -49 C!!
My chickens are fine, I locked them in their coop (which is really small and insulated) and have a heat lamp on. DH was worried and checked them at 5am. Said they were toasty. But one of my kids let 1...
My poor Matilda the gold-necked d'uccle was filthy. It wamed up a bit today (-10 C) so I thought I'd give her a bath. She's almost dry, and I'll be waiting to put her back with the others tonight when the heat lamp comes on. That way she can acclimatize again, slowly.
Anyways, here she...

Thanks!

My favorite chicken died this morning....I opened the coop and reached in to pet her. She was just lying on the floor of the coop. We had struggled with impacted crop, but that cleared a few days ago. Is it possible she had an infection from the impacted crop (she was impacted for over 2...
My favorite (of course) hen has had an impacted crop for almost 2 weeks now. She is emaciated, and eating lots. Some food must be getting through, as she still eats and drinks. Her breath is not sour, but her poop is pretty runny. I have massaged her crop, given olive oil and apple cider...
OK, my poor babies!
They have lice (or had :thun ), which they got from a friends flock... love you friend! lol
Anyways, we dusted with DE, and we were VERY thorough! We were careful around the mouth and nostrils. So we took some pics, and are they ever cute, like little ghosties...
here's a link to a mom named Anita Renfrew and her condensed version of everything a mom might have to say to her kid/s! I saw her in person about a month ago at a Ladies Retreat in Calgary, Alberta. I laughed till I cryed...hope you do, too!
My two Mille Fleur banties are in Jeopardy! Not the show~ My DH says they are Aliens in mini-chick bodies, they look like chickens, they act like chickens, but are NOT real chickens!
His evidence? They don't LAY! Now I tried patiently to explain to My Love, that they might not be ready, and...
New to rabbits and chickens, and am looking for info about fall fairs, and such. It's easy to find out about rabbit shows(looks like I missed them for this year) but what about chickens? There was just an ag event on Olds, went to that, but no chickens? Help, someone please! I miss the fall...
OK, this is a revisit to a post I had submitted, and I just wanted to add my pics!
My silkie hen, UhOh hatched out 6 chicks wednesday night(of course) and thursday night(you knew it had to be)... She's in my bedroom, doing well and so are the babies. We've had some close calls....

My Silkie Hen UhOh Hatched her eggs! (well, 4 of them!)
And she's 2 days early! We have her up in my bedroom, and me and my husband were up all night long! AHHHH! Child birth! She seems to be mothering them well, maybe too well? LOL, they want out from beneath her wings to see us (probably...
We (DH, with me supervising, swinging a hammer occassionally and hurting people) finished the coop a couple of months ago, but just recently moved the poor thing to it's final resting place after dragging it to all corners of our yard first. I think I'm happy now, and when Mama ain't happy...
OK, I have been lurking (and learning) long enough!
I have 3 ladies altogether, 1 silkie, and these 2 I don't knows.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanx!
