    Predator on the prowl

I don't have to worry about any ground predators. We have dogs that won't let anything in the yard. They will be reduced soon. I have 6 going in the freezer in the next week or so. I only have about 30 birds, but when they travel in groups, on 50 acres, it's hard to get them all in before others...

    Predator on the prowl

Shooting it is not an option. I have a chain link fence, covered over top with wire, which we originally had them in, and my hens lay in there, however, they travel in always 3, usually more groups and it's near impossible to get them all in the coup. I've tried. We ended up having to climb the...

    Predator on the prowl

Living way out in the country, we've dealt with many predators, from a coon coming into our house and stealing fruit, to a bald eagle on our pond attacking our Ducks. Most are simple fixes: a coon or fox, or something of that nature-you shoot it. But we now have a new predator on the prowl: what...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Setting my own. I have 9 RIR hens and had a RIR roo until 3 weeks ago. I was going to fill up the bator this time (45 eggs) but I found my roo dead in the middle of the pen. :he not sure what happened to him! All the hens were fine, and as I said, he was in the middle, so nothing got to him...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Thank you! I do candle and kind of eye judge air sacs. On day 18, before lockdown, I candled, and all air cells seemed pretty normal. Infact, I wondered if some were too big. Maybe that's the ones that ended up hatching, and it was actually the right size! Just a learning process I guess! I...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Here's a picture you might can tell. All I did was break through the end with the air sac (or where it should have been). All I removed was the shell and layer stuck to it. As you can see, the chick is completely filling the egg. I ended up opening all 7 of the remaining eggs. All were dead...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Help again!! So I decided to open an egg, since I've only had 1 chick in the last 24 hours, and it was well over 12 hrs ago. I opened one, the chick was dead, no eyes, no top beak, and brain poked out. The air sac was gone, and the chick took up the entire egg. Opened another, it stunk, but...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Our weakest chick died last night. I have 13 still alive. They're still hatching!...? They were all put in they same day. The temp was right, did a dry hatch, all I can think of is hot spots in the bator.

    Intervention: Helping Your Chicks Hatch

Awesome post. I had to help two chicks for the first time today, including removing membranes. The membranes had dried out, the chicks had zipped the shell but only a few small places in the membrane, so I had to break the membrane across where the chicks had zipped. One did great, the other is...

Just my luck! Power outage. HELP!

Awsome idea! Might have to do that! We plan to invest in better equipment if these first few trials go well, so that will probably be something we get! Thanks

Just my luck! Power outage. HELP!

Thanks y'all! Power was off for 2 1/2 hours. Wrapped the incubator, took out all the stronger chick, left the two week ones in. One of my weak ones died but I didn't expect it to make it anyway. Hopefully the eggs are still good!

Just my luck! Power outage. HELP!

24 left to hatch, due today, three drying currently, and 9 dried in the ducked. How do I keep them warm when it's a power outage!?

    Leaving chicks in bator

12 chicks so far :) I had to help two of them :/ they both started pecking around the egg 5 hours ago, stopped, and the membrane (or whatever that white is under the shell) had dried out, so I had to break the membrane where the shell was pecked 3/4 of the way around the egg. I separated the egg...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Thank you! I woke up this morning, and the chick with the yolk sac is almost dead. It can't even lift it's head. I picked it up to examine it, and it's not the yolk sac hanging out (I've had several with that before) it's the intestines. No doubt. Guess I'm going to have to put it down. :( but...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Just took out the 7 dried, hatched chicks. The one that's yolk sac is still attatched probably won't make it. It's dried up, black and the chick is very small com paired to the rest. I snapped a quick photo as I took the others out. It's the chick on the left. I watched the right chick come out...

    Leaving chicks in bator

Thank y'all! With my last hatch I had 12 fully developed that didn't hatch, and everyone was saying it was because I opened the bator to remove the other chicks, but truthfully I believe they drowned. I use a styrofoam bator currently and had the channels full the entire time. This time I am...

    Leaving chicks in bator

How long do I leave the chicks in the bator? They hatched in the middle of the night last night and so far 7 out of 36 have hatched with more pipped. When do I take the hatched chicks out. Also, I have one chick who hatched about 4 hours ago and still hasn't absorbed yolk sac...? What's left is...

Second set of eggs to hatch early

I have Rhode Island reds, so that's probably not why. Last time I had 3-4 hatch with yolks not absorbered, and that's what worries me. I have a styrofoam bator and can't really see in there, as the look through parts are scratched, so I'll have to test with another thermometer after hatch, so I...

Second set of eggs to hatch early

I hatched a batch of eggs last month, hatching began on day 20, only 12 out of 35 hatched, 14 eggs were fully developed, but never hatched, one chick was deformed, one was a double yolk with twins that died about 13-15 days (didn't know it was a double yolk until I opened it). It was just...
