post your chicken coop pictures here!

LOL! Yes that's what I did too! I put one roost up really high for the "guineas" and then the chickens took it over. So I put another one up and then the guineas laid claim to that one. Over time the guineas have been trying to take over the other high roost again too!

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Thank you! The teepee was something we thought up because we had some trees that had fallen down on the property and I wanted to build more shelter/shade for the chickens. We laugh because they actually use it a lot! Almost every time I check on them there are anywhere from 3-7 chickens huddled...

post your chicken coop pictures here!

Chicken coop is 12 1/2 X 8 & 1/2 ft with a notched out area (I call it their phone booth) that is 4ft X 5ft. Their phone booth area has a staggered roost type area and that's where the majority of the chickens roost at night. Outdoor attached run is 10 X 10. Large area is 50 X 70. Then the...

Wanting to hear people's experience with coop size

My coop is built into a corner of the barn. The coop is about 12 & 1/2 ft X 8 & 1/2 ft with 9 -10 ft ceiling. They have another notched out area in their coop that is 4ft X 5ft. They have about 9 roosts all throughout the coop, 2 roosts that are about 10 ft long. I have 22 hens, 1 roo and 4...

How much does it cost to feed chickens?

If you live in or close to a rural area, you may be able to find a "feed mill." For me, they have the cheapest cost for all my scratch grains and feed. My local feed mill sells a 75lb bag of layer chicken feed for $11.51 including tax. I am very fortunate because I haven't ever seen feed for...

Chicken Run Ideas, would love to see your pics!

I had a couple questions, as I am looking to re-do the run. The run is about 55x55 ft. Right now we have deer netting. Has worked pretty well, but the elements have beat it up pretty bad over the past year and a half. I am replacing it with the galvanized metal fencing. I have never had...

    Raising Guinea Fowl 101

I have 4 pearl gray guinea fowl. I received them as keets the first week of April this year from rural king. Just last week I found my first egg. I've gotten three more since then. I guess I was just amazed because I had read where my guineas weren't supposed to start laying eggs until next...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm sure you are correct about the males being killed, I've heard the horror stories. But just because it happens doesn't mean I want a front seat, or I want to personally had a male off to someone to kill it. Kinda like capital punishment. Just because it happens doesn't mean I want to watch...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Oops, never mind. I did another search and did find a couple places. They have a minimum of 25 though, unless I want to spend like a $100 for 5 chicks, so I guess my Welsummers will have to wait. Not sure I can afford those prices. Sorry for the post!

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm not sure where else to ask this question, but I really would like some Welsummer pullets someday. However, everywhere I have looked they only sell straight run. Is there a reason for this? I've looked on-line at many different places and my local feed mill that sells chicks and even rural...

Comment by 'Sunsetlake' in article 'Introducing New Chickens: Using the “See but don’t touch” Method'

I raise my chicks in their brooder until they are 4 weeks old, then move them to a dog cage in the coop for two more weeks so the new ones and old ones get to know each other. I open the cage doors when they are 6 weeks old. I prop the doors open just wide enough that the new ones can get back...

    Wow! The mess. Newbie shocked.

Yes, ducks are a mess! I have four and they are pros at finding any water or mud in their area. My setup works, but I'm always tweaking it as I learn more how they work. They have one waterer inside their pen. It is a plastic kitty litter container/jug with a handle with the top cut out so they...

    Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Just thought I'd give my guinea experience so far. My 4 guineas are now a little over 10 weeks old. I received them as a "gift" when they were a few days old. I raised them in a box inside until they were about 3 weeks old, then moved them to their pen outside in the barn which is right...

coop bedding- what do you prefer??

I go for cheap, but still useful. I use the free mulch our local town has. The free mulch smells great - full of sticks, leaves, pine needles, wood shavings, etc. The birds love it. They dig and scratch in it and then borrow in it and create their beds to cool themselves in the summer. Then...

    Sudden chicken death

I found my 11 month old easter egger, Elizabeth, dead yesterday morning. It looked as though she had just fell over and died off her roost. She was one of the top hens in the pecking order, so she was always on the top roost beside the roo. She had seemed fine, was eating fine, and was laying...

    Missing Hen - Possibly Broody?

Thanks for the idea, but I filled in the pool. I actually already have a dust bath area for the chickens in an old tire. They love it! It just seems crazy that she died drowning in a pool. After building them a safe coop and run, enclosing everything and trying to make sure no holes or...

    Missing Hen - Possibly Broody?

Thank you I just wish I would've known, but I didn't even think about it being a problem. But, I just spent a couple hours filling in the pool. The ducks will have to deal with no pool. They will have their water pan and that's it. Thanks again for your help and kind words.

    Missing Hen - Possibly Broody?

Update: I found my hen and she is dead. No predator, she apparently fell into a kiddie pool I had in their play area and drowned. :hit At least it wasn't a predator. But still very sad as she was such an interesting chicken. Needless to say the kiddie pool has been removed. In all my...
