My eggs are fertile. So far, I have been storing them in the refrigerator, unwashed.
However, if I want to take them to work as gifts, I have to wash them because I found out they can't "sweat" or they'll absorb bacteria. I hate washing the bloom off!
I do not have a basement or garage...
I broke the cardinal rule. I opened the incubator during hatch. My first chick fell down through the corner of my incubator where the hardware cloth didn't fit tight and I rescued it. I know, I'll definitely fix that. And NEVER open again during hatch. You live you learn.
So, I ended up...
Oh my gosh, the flies are awful! I tried the baggies with pennies. Didnt work. I made some "traps" with bait and 20oz coke bottles.
It caught some but I think they just breed inside there and some do escape. I am off to the dollar store to get some vanilla air fresheners.
I also have...
I have one big cornish X that is about 17 weeks old. I have been letting her grow, hoping to breed some little meaty-ish babies. So, I can't help you but I am anxious for someone that can to reply!
-However, she is pretty gross. Her butt stays dirty because she lies around all the time and...
Thanks. I will try to do that (mix them). I wonder if the increased protein would just make the chicks fat or...be hard on their organs or what.
Hopefully it will all work out.
I let the littles out of their pen for most of the day. (Inside the backyard fence) The older flock seemed to mostly put their nose in the air and fly over the fence to free range my property - there was a little chasing going on when they returned for treats but I think it is getting better.
I love all the pictures! Such pretty chickens! I have 8 silkies in my flock.
I guess I have about 3 more months to wait until we can start guessing gender
Well.. at least I've been calling them the right breed!
I have 23 chickens and an incubator full, but these 8 are my closest to laying age.. and I am sooo anxious for backyard eggs! Come on girls!
"Pullets" from TSC. I've been calling them sex links. Is this correct? I have 8 and they will be 18 weeks old on Wednesday. No eggs yet.. but any day now right?
My silkies are 7 weeks and 3 days old. Ha.
When can I start trying to sex them?.
Or, i've heard I might just have to wait for a crow or an egg. (That might be awhile!)
I let my littles out twice today. The older hens definitely let them know who is higher in the pecking order, but the littles run away and the older hens don't push it.
I think if I keep supervising playtime, they will eventually get acquainted.
Two of the little easter eggers fight the worst...
:( I don't think I will do shipped eggs again. Doesn't even look like anything in the incubator is developing. I bet they are scrambled. I could cry.
I should see veins by day 4 right? -of course I won't give up on them.
Anyone have luck ordering live babies from cackle hatchery?
Glad to know your hatch was still a sucess when eggs were delivered late. Thanks for that. They were shipped on Wednesday. Guessing laid on tuesday.
Also, I know they dont update after they reach my area. But I am in Mississippi. They havent updated since july 2 in California! Crazy.
Sorry to...
Thank you. I did that at your suggestion. Customer service is dumbfounded, cant find package, but apparently 2 day priority is still acceptable to deliver after 5 days.. so if they come Monday, usps says thats ok. :(
