We have been having a heat index of 105 degrees the past few days. I've made sure my chickens have had plenty of food and water. When I'm home, I let them out to find their own comfy space. Today was just terrible. The heat and humidity have just been awful. I just went out to shut up the...
I make this apron for as gift for people: http://jonag.typepad.com/stop_staring_and_start_se/2008/12/your-christmas-gift-from-mean-apron-in-an-hour.html. It looks great on thinner ladies, but not so much on us fuller figured gals. : ) I know that for those who are fuller figured, gathering the...
I'd posted on here a couple of weeks ago. My chickens had been through their molt and then our weather changed. It went from very warm fall days -- almost 80 degrees to daytime highs of 45 degrees or so and rainy, literally overnight. So I had only been getting an egg or two (if I was lucky from...
My chickens have been through the molt this year. I thought they were all done and maybe should have picked up on the laying by now. It's been a couple of months from the start of the molt to now. The weather turned from very warm (low 80s) fall weather to frigid fall temps (low 40s) with rain...
I am looking to have an old wooden rocking chair stripped and refinished. It is very sturdy, just could use some love. About how much does refinishing run? I was looking to take on the project earlier, but I am 5 months pregnant and don't think it would be a good idea right now (fumes, etc)...
I keep the straw that I use for chicken bedding in my garage. I notice these tiny almost sand colored bugs in it. If I go out to the coop and grab couple of eggs, I'll set them on the clean straw in the garage until I wash them at night. Sometimes I'll catch these little bugs running all over...
I'd like prayers for my Grandma, please. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this week. She will be 83 in June. She is very active and even still works full-time at the family excavating business as the office manager (just as she has since the business started 61 years ago). I know that...
This was my fist experiencs with Cornish Xs. I did Dixie Rainbows last year. The Cornish were way better, in my opinion. I let them go to 9 & 10 weeks. I fed them a 24% Dumor game feed from TSC through six weeks and then switched to a 18% protein locally mixed feed after that. And this past...
I was just looking for some input. My six year old DD is responsible for keeping her room picked up, setting the table, and putting her laundry away. She'd love to do the dishes -- or so she says right now. She is supposed to care for her cats, but doesn't do it like she should - so I do it...
It is supposed to get down to 18 degrees tonight. I have 20 one week old chicks. They are out in the coop with a red 250 watt heat light on them at all times. It is about 2 feet off the ground. It hasn't been this cold out at night -- tonight is the only night that's supposed to be this chilly...
Just wondering if you can help me identify this bantam breed. I picked this little guy (well, hopefully, girl) out of the mixed straight run banty bin at my local Family Farm and Home store. They get all their chicks from Townline Hatchery in Zeeland, MI. It is one week old. I went to Townline's...
I wanted to try my hand at Cornish Xs this year and was wondering if any of you just feed them broiler feed with no antibiotics/vitamins. Last year I raised some Dixie Rainbows and they were fed just a straight broiler feed with nothing extra added in. I'd like to do the same with the Cornish...
Take a minute to vote for Suzanne McMinn. She has her own blog - www.suzannemcminn.com. Well, she is trying to win the Sam-e good mood blogger gig. So take a minute to vote for her at www.sam-e.com/job/profile/718. Take a look at her blog (Chickens in the Road), too -- I love it!
I am finishing up with the Dixies. And I think I'll do the Cornish next time. The Dixie roosters seem to be a decent size, but the pullets are not even close to being ready at all. I let the the roosters and pullets go to 15 weeks. They were not ready at 12 weeks. I freely fed them a 24% protein...
Looking to order some next year from JM Hatchery, so looking for some info. I am currently raising Dixie Rainbows from S and G Poultry. These guys seem to be growing quite nicely (6weeks old), but would like to try the other colored rangers. Thanks for your input!
What color did you order --...
I have a year and a half old EE hen who has a broken wing. They have been in the coop and run for about a month and a half (tomatoes ripening in the garden) so I have no idea how this happened. I did let them out to free range for the first time in a long time, tonight. I noticed she was...
Just wondering if my girls are on hiatus right now. I was getting about 9 eggs a day and now I am getting 3 to 4 eggs a day. This has been going on for almost a week. Should I be worried about an egg eater? I see no signs of it. They usually do free range, but I have had them in the coop and run...
I have four 25 week old EEs. They are on laying mash. Three of them have combs and faces that have turned red (probably for about two and a half weeks or so). And one is still unchanged. So just wondering others experiences with EEs and laying ages.
Anybody have any thought on the Dixie Rainbows? I have some on order and will pick them up in August. So excited. This will be my first time raising meat birds. When I was young, I used to help my Grandpa, but he had Cornish Xs. So any thoughts would be appreciated!
