I agree! DH also made the "poop trays"-he used sheet metal and fabricated them somehow so that they just slide in and out. I knew he was smart when I married him-glad we got chickens so that I could discover he's a flippin' genious. Cute, too!
I have aspen shavings in with my little ones, with paper towels over so that they won't ingest them. I'll switch to pure aspen at about 4 weeks (did this last time around, seems to work well).
My terribly clever DH made our girls a great little coop last spring, and this year's spring cleaning was a snap thanks to the removable wall he designed into it. Just remove, spray down with high pressure nozzle, dry (drain holes in the floor assist with this), add straw, and viola!

Me too. I have aspen shavings in between paper towels to aid with absorbancy. When they get older I will remove the paper towels, but for now I am playing it safe.
I have a Sony digital, and the gals are frolicking in my raised Square foot Garden (the only time they will be allowed to do so!!!!). It helps that they fancy themselves wee little supermodels!
