    Swollen eye

I have a hen with a swollen eye and one crusty black spot on her beak under her nasal passage. I have not noticed any drainage or other symptoms. She's separated and we put a warm cloth on her eye to open it and flushed with saline. We also put a dab of neosporin on it. Can anyone tell me what...

    Chick with raspy voice

I went out to check on the chicks this morning. This little girl is about 9 weeks old and she has lost her voice? No drainage or anything. We did get a bit of a cold snap, but she seems to be doing fine other than her voice. Any ideas?

No eggs for at least 3 weeks

I'm perplexed. I have 2 australorp hens who have always been excellent layers. They are about 2.5 years old. They went through their molt and I haven't gotten one egg from either of them in 2 months (I have another australorp who is an internal layer). I have 4 cream legbar pullets who are...

    Coop insulation

I have stupid insulation question. :-) We are in Texas. We are building a new open air coop with a metal roof. I'm concerned about insulating the roof from the hot Texas sun. What would be the cheapest way to accomplish this? Could I use old feed bags stuffed with hay for roof insulation? Are...

Does your rooster crow on command?

We have a crazy cream legbar rooster. We spend a lot of time laughing at him. We can make him crow on command, just by cock a doodle dooing at him. He gets so irritated and has to prove he's the big man around the coop. Does anyone else have a rooster who does this? He isn't aggresive...

Drained ascites fluid and now in respiratory distress

We just drained our 3 year old australorp for ascites. We got 3 12cc syringes full of fluid and stopped. Now she seems to be having trouble breathing and is making gurgling choking sounds. What do I do????

    Egg bound Hen

I have a 2 year old australorp. When I checked the coop today it seemed like for most of the day, two of the 3 were in the run and one was in the nesting box. I can't tell them apart. this evening one of the girls had a dirty vent and was lying down. She had no interest in BOSS or mealworms...

    PDZ in brooder?

I should be getting my cream legbar babies next month. Getting ready to set up the brooder. Would it be safe to use Sweet PDZ only for the bedding material? It sounds cleaner and less smelly to take care of.

    Well, I did it....

We started with 5 BA's about 2 years ago. We lost one while free ranging. Never say a trace of her. Yesterday we just lost another with no trace. It's heartbreaking, but I guess it's the price you pay for free ranging. I've been wanting to get some cream legbars and I found someone hatching...

    What's wrong with her comb?

Any ideas? I have 4 BA's and none of their combs are smooth/bright red.

    Lost my first girl today

I have 5 hens. We let them free range daily. I went out at 1 pm and only saw 4 if them, no noise, no feathers, nothing. Our backyard, which is their normal hangout is about 50 feet deep and we have a very thick wooded area behind is. I did the best I could walking the wood line (I broke my foot...

    Won't go in the coop

I have 5 BA's that are approximately 7 or 8 weeks old. They have been in their coop with attached run for about two weeks. I let them out into the run in the morning and put them back in the coop at night. They still haven't learned to go into the coop when it gets dark. They will all stay...
