Hi,
I have 3 older hens (about 4 or 5 years old) and am starting to integrate my 7 week old baby chicks by putting them in the run during the day (and putting them back in the brooder, without the heat lamp, in the house at night). In another week or so i'd like to put them out in the coop...
I am anxious to get my huge chicks out of my house. They are more than ready to go outside. Coop should be finished this weekend. Problem is I live in Oregon and although it is supposed to be mid-70's Fri and Sat and almost 90 on Sun we just finished a huge rainstorm and will likely get more...

Notice how the chickens practically have to stick their head inside to get the food? Keeps them from throwing it around with their beak. We're going to build one of these, hopefully this weekend.
I picked up a chick a few days old that was all blonde except for a black spot on the tip of each wing and the middle of her back. I was told about the sexing thing and that she might end up being a he. Well now that chick is almost 4 weeks old and has a ton of brown feathers with hardly a hint...
We have four chicks, one for each member of the family.
My stepson (he's 14) has an Australorp named Frito.
My 2.5 yr old daughter's Buff Orp is Pink (yes, she is in THAT stage right now. She also expects her to lay pink eggs).
My DH's Rhode Island Red is Gobbles.
My beautiful little Salmon...
You can buy metal brackets that you set in concrete. The brackets have holes in them so you can put a wood post in and bolt them in. This is very useful if you live in a wet/cold climate because eventually all wood rots and will have to be replaced and you don't want to have to bust up concrete...
Howdy all! I'm yet another urbanite in Portland that just got chickens! We picked up 2 babies on March 5 (Buff Orp and an Australorp) and 2 more on April 1 (Salmon Faverolles and a RIR). They all get along fabulously despite the difference in age/size. The big uns are quickly getting sick of our...

Mine is by far the loudest chick of the bunch! (1 RIR, 1 Salmon Faverolles, 1 Buff Orp, and 1 Australorp). She peeps non stop and I think the others are anxious to get outside already and get some space from her.
I live in Oregon, where it rains a lot, and it actually helps us to break the compost down faster if we keep it wet. We actually have to water it in the summer months! We have an open one too and are looking forward to being able to add poop shavings from the coop!
No, we're not really interested in breeding, just eggs. We got the standard Australorp, Buff Orp, and RIR but I wanted something different for the 4th and when I saw that the store we got the others from was getting in Faverolles I researched them and totally fell in love. The store is just your...
I am new to chickens.
I just picked up a salmon faverolle chick, tiny tiny, maybe a few days to a week old? She has the classic dark grey spot on the tips of her wings. Does that mean she is actually a he? Or is it too soon to tell? About how old before it becomes obvious? We are urban chicken...
Yes, I'm also thinking we'll have to jack it up. We've done the wood chip dump too (for landscaping/mulching) but I was worried about the cedar factor. As you know there are many cedar trees around here (I'm in Portland) and there is no way to separate them out. Maybe its not an issue in a...
For those of you that use it in the run - how often do you find yourself having to clean it out and replace it? Our run will have a roof but will be open to the elements on the sides. We live in the Pacific Northwest and it gets pretty damp in the winter months. The floor of the run is elevated...
When you guys say "coop" do you mean just the hen house? Or the run as well? Obviously this question doesn't apply to anyone who has lots of land for free ranging!
There is a lot of gravel underneath the structure, so it should drain pretty well. And yes the base is pressure treated so it should last a little while. The roof will keep most water away. I'm more worried about moisture from the inside - from any rain blowing in and from chicken poop. I'm...
Thanks for the advice. Hubby was not too happy after all the work he put in but we want something we won't have to clean out every week. The whole structure will be roofed but rain does blow sideways here sometimes and I'd hate for the inside to get wet and nasty.
If he doesn't want to tear out...
