    Rapidly declining flock

I am in Arkansas. They eat just regular layer pellets and the occasional veggie/fruit scraps. I would hope not, but it is a very odd thing. Thank you so much!

    Rapidly declining flock

I can't imagine that they have. The vet also mentioned salt toxicity, but they eat just regular layer pellets and some veggie/fruit scraps occasionally.

    Rapidly declining flock

Thank you so much. I'll will inquire about a necropsy. I forgot to add that I would very frequently find soft shelled eggs that were broken in the nesting box from one or all of those hens. So far, the eggs now have all been normal. It's so sad to watch them pass....I feel just helpless except...

    Rapidly declining flock

We had 9 hens, all around 2.5 years old. We've had three die within a month of each other. The first one was visibly ill/off when I first noticed. She was hunched over, ruffled feathers, floppy comb, sour crop, greenish/white poop covered bottom feathers, and VERY swollen abdomen. After looking...

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

Great, thank you! I really do appreciate your correspondence. Hoping this has been the cause of her distress. Seems treatable with diligence.

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

So guessing it's fly strike....our first hen that passed last week had a very normal, moist pink vent. Nothing abnormal looking there. This one, yes....

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

Thank you! I was getting ready to attempt to try it and was washing off her poopy bottom and was aghast to see a slimy, gray area above her vent that was pouring out maggots....needless to say I didn't drain...I tried to remove all the maggots I could and washed her with soap and peroxide. I...

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

Thank you so much eggsessive! I really appreciate your response. Do you think it's worth it to drain the belly? I've given one a round of antibiotics before via syringe, so I think I could do it....

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

The first hen that passed, her crop felt very full and unusually squishy. Her belly felt like it was very full of water, same with this second hen. Could the egg peritonitis be the cause in the second hen too? So close together with the first death and now this second hen within a week? I don't...

Swollen abdomen, another hen showing symptoms

Hello! Last week we lost one of our laying hens. I noticed she was just standing around, hunched with ruffled feathers. Her comb was floppy. When I picked her up, a bunch of fluid came out of her mouth. I quickly researched on here in all of the areas that pertained to her symptoms and thought...

    Limping/Swollen foot

Yes, I've read her stuff. That's how we learned about it the first time around. It was helpful. Pics of her foot are in the original post. We are on day 3 of her round of antibiotics. I actually used a syringe yesterday while giving her injection and remove a lot of fluid. I can NOT do the...

    Limping/Swollen foot

Found some great info on here about using penicillin G injections for 4 days. I'm soaking her foot in Epsom salt daily too. Really hoping she gets better.

    Limping/Swollen foot

Thank you. Is it treatable with antibiotics as well? I feel so bad for her...is using a scalpel the best way or a syringe? We've been using the scalpel. It pains me to hurt her, but I want her to get better.

    Limping/Swollen foot

Our Salmon Faverolle had bumble foot last year. It was lanced and the entire kernel came out. She seemed to have healed nicely. She started limping again about a month ago and we noticed the tiniest, black scab on her pad. Much, much smaller than last year. So small, we were hesitant to lance...

    Limping with swollen foot

Hello, I just noticed our Salmon Faverolle hen is limping. She has been wanting to hang out in the nesting box all day. Her right foot in the middle toe area is swollen and red. She is a year and 2 months old. Here are some pictures. Any idea or advice on what is causing her discomfort and...

    Arkansas folks speak up.........

Nope! No limit. I can't remember if roosters are allowed though. We have 9 hens (6 Golden Sex Links, 1 Salmon Faverolle, 1 Barred Rock, and 1 Easter Egger) and an 8 week old French Black Copper Maran that I'm hoping is a girl!
