My squeaky girl got over it and then she was squeaky and got over it again. We're in a drought and have had a lot of fires, so our air quality has been really bad. I think she just had irritation. She has been fine in every other way, and she never misses a day laying, so I felt like she was...
This is awesome! Of course, I'd need a bucket that was cuter. The girls deserve that. We have a "gym" in our garage so we should make two, one for them and one for us.
We might actually get a little rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
We have three dogs and a cat, so I wasn't sure if I'd feel like the chickens were pets, but I really grown to adore them, especially Janet. I got them at 4 and 5 weeks, to insure they were girls, so they're probably not as cuddly as if I raised them from chicks, but Janet, in particular, follows...
Oh good. The heat has been awful, and the air quality doesn't help. It's just so dry. Janet always has a HUGE crop at night, so I bug her every morning making sure it's empty. Poor girl puts up with a lot from me.
Thanks. It's always so hard when you see an animal who seems to be in distress and you can't help them. With her, she seemed normal in every other way, but when I looked up causes for a chicken losing her voice, it was all kinds of scary things, except they had other symptoms that she didn't...
After three days of a whispery squeak, her voice is a lot stronger this morning! Her biggest concern was her sister hogging the nesting box. I'm such a mother hen with my chickens and all my pets. I feel much better about Janet this morning. At least I know of a chicken vet in the area now...
Huh. She's only 6 months old, so I suppose she's still developing her voice. She was definitely saying "let me out, let me out!" in the video. It's a totally new sound for her, though. It sounds strained compared to her other vocalizations.
Thank you! We have two different vets for our dogs and cat and neither treat chickens. I've been looking for a vet for the chickens, too. Of course I didn't need one until now, so I was only looking so hard. I was going to call UC Davis tomorrow (though I don't know who I'd talk to). I just got...
One of my two RIR's started squeaking a couple days ago when she attempts to squawk. Her clucks still sound normal, though, and she's had some improvement with her squawks. It's now more of a mix of squeak and regular, but I'm still concerned.
She's breathing fine, has a ton of energy, a...
First egg laid outside the nesting box yesterday. It wasn't that Janet forgot where to go, but they had been free ranging for a couple hours when Janet went back to the run, up to the coop, and into the nesting box to lay. I decided to give the dogs their turn in the yard, so I used a little...
Lots of eggs being laid since I was last able to check in. Congratulations!
I only have two girls, but they're little workers. Since her first week of laying in early July, Janet has only missed one day. Penny started out slow, but now she's on a roll. She was laying later and later in the...
My girls are squawky, especially Penny. She also does a great balk, balk, balk that could be used for a cartoon chicken. It's awesome. However, neither is all that loud in the nesting box. They'll make some noise but then they go into a bit of a trance.
Congrats to everyone on their first eggs!
