Hey there, welcome!
I'm also new to keeping chickens and am also in TN. I currently have 4 RI Red pullets that I raised from day old chicks. I built my own coop and currently have my chickens part-time free ranging. No roos because I live in the suburbs.
Anyway good luck, contact me if you need...
Also to those who suggested I make the roosting pole larger, I just put in a nice big plank of wood, wide side up, for them this morning! Thanks for the tip y'all! :)
I gave my ladies a mulberry branch and they couldn't be bothered. They have however been picking the tiny strawberries off my strawberry plant before they have the chance to ripen...
But they love mealworms and go bonkers over the little fried noodles that you put in wonton soup :)
The roosting pole was put in when they were much tinier chicks - now that they're almost 4 months old I believe you're right, it's time to upgrade to big chicken roosts :)
And maybe the pic has some funky perspective but the nest boxes are covered :)
Actually the bar you might be referring to is the nest box top... Their perch is above it, and it's made of a thick wooden stake for climbing veggie vines. In terms if the chicken wire, I do realize its limitations but they mostly free range anyway. And I have a perimeter fence, a very barky dog...
Always updating!
Just painted the coop with barn paint, added a hinged egg door that locks, and made the nest box top hinged for easy egg access. Also recently made the coop floor raised because of recent flooding.
The gals are living in style

Raised area with food/water...
No worries, they're not allowed in the backyard at the same time. The vicious white fluff machine is too old and ornery to put up with the chickens. So they go back in their run when the pup comes out :)
I asked a similar question very recently... Here's the thread!

It's funny you mention a dog training clicker because clicker-training elephants is like 80% of my work day, haha. I've seen videos of people clicker training chickens, and now y'all have got me thinking :)
Ah she comes in at night. Hoping her scent keeps the raccoons away. But if not, they get locked up tight at night, and I even put a brick in front of their coop door. :)
Hey y'all,
So I know that RIRs aren't known for their great personalities, but I raised mine from day 1, and they were just the sweetest ladies when they lived in their indoor brooder. They would climb all over me and fall asleep in my lap.
I moved them to their outdoor coop/run st around 5...
Actually we live in a pretty quiet suburban area with not many predators. I've seen a handful of outdoor cats and some birds of prey but otherwise no other critters.
Oh and also we have one of these vicious beasts to protect our chickens ;)
Hey there. I posted a pic of my pallet coop a few weeks ago, and some folks recommended I make the run bigger - so I took some advice from some of the other threads on here and built a pvc extension that we can climb in and hang out with them! Behold!
Yeah, the door isn't exactly the right...
UPDATE!
Here are some updated pics of my RIR pullets - they're currently 8 weeks old and looking more like big chickens! My original suspected roo is still looking different from the other girls, but other than being really behind on feather development and being a complete meanie, she seems to...
