Hi Everyone!
These recipes are great! However, I was wondering if anyone has ideas or experience with making something like a 'chick stick?' One of those large, rectangular treat sticks that are harder so the chicks can't eat them so fast? My only thought is what I use for dogs, and that is...
Hey all,
I am having quite the interesting dilemma with my flock of 16 hens and 2 roosters. We were getting 6-12 eggs per day, even through weeks of negative double digit temperature. On Monday, I gathered 9 eggs. No eggs on Tuesday. I let them out on Wednesday (I let them out around noon...
lalaland,
Thanks SO much for all the helpful information. Here's some responses:
Weight Loss
I will do further homework on wormers, and get a float from the vet. I'm not sure how this slipped my mind, as I have always had dogs, cats and horses.
Blood
The blood is not in the droppings. I...
Thanks for the info. I purchased my chicks from the local farm store, and they were labeled 'Aracana/Ameraucana.' Easter egger was in their description. Keep in mind, this is a farm store in rural Northern Michigan... From what I've gathered (which isn't much, this is my first year with...
Thanks! This is crash course for me. I don't have a lot of money to spend on an incubator, but getting one that won't hatch eggs anyway is rather dumb.
Thanks! That was more or less what I was thinking. This is the incubator I was thinking about getting. Yes or no? I'm sure I should be posting on a hatching thread, but I really want to get my feelers out for good Ameraucanas to join my 'Operation: Well Muffed Wild Colors' breeding project.
Question. Has anyone ordered hatching eggs through the mail? I'm looking to get some new colors, well muffed and bearded Ameraucanas. I have nine; two roosters (a red pyle blue splash wheaten and a wildly colored red pyle,) three red partridge, one blue splash white, one blue splash wheaten...
Hi! I need a bit of advice regarding my chickens here in Northern Michigan.
I have a mixed flock of 18; nine Ameraucanas (two roosters, one got frostbite on his comb-over,) five Light Brahmas, two Production Reds, one Black Star and one Silver-Laced Wyandotte. They have an 8'x10' raised (2')...
I'm so happy to hear about Phoebe!!! My husband told me I was bonkers when I brought Ava (now known as 'Sicky Chickey') into the garage with heat lamps, blankets and towels. All that for a $2.79 chick. I somehow feel that I'm in good company at this forum, Phoebe being a perfect example.
As...
I have three EE roosters; one that I raised from a fuzzy poof with an egg horn (grew up to be a blue splash red pyle wheaten) and two that I got from my girlfriend when they were 3-4 months old with no handling.
My Roo is fantastic. He's wonderful with his girls, never damages any feathers...
I live in Michigan also (about 90 minutes north from Muskegon,) and after last winter, I'm ready to bring my chickens in for the winter! My coop is 8'x10' with a 9' pitch. It's 3' off the ground and has East (2 1'x2') and West (2 2'x4') ventilation grates. There are North and South entry...
Hey! You could bring her down to Michigan to stay with me! It's only a two day drive...
BluKote does not repel flies. It's just a super bacteria, fungus, infection and wound treatment. It does form a protective barrier, but I'm not sure about the flies.
As for Ava, how long should I keep...
I have an update, also. Ava is doing well, she is alert and walking around. Underneath the BluKote it looks like the puncture is filling in, and her skin is starting to grow back... very slowly. I trimmed more feathers so I could get a better view. Poor thing looks like she lost a battle with...
Sorry about the explosion of my second to last post. It told me it was unable to post, so I re-submitted it. Apparently it did post.
Should I be re-irrigating the wounds twice a day with the Betadine and BluKote?
Thanks for your kind words, Lindsay44. And I hope that your girl continues to improve, also.
As for my girl, we're going on Day Three. They both laid eggs yesterday, which I think is a good sign. I irrigated her wounds last night, doused her wounds with Betadine, then painted her bluish...
Thank everyone so much. I have her clutch mate in with her, and they are doing well. Ava is eating and drinking normally, she just looks rather pathetic with no secondary flight feathers and bloody wings. She is laying down a lot, which I can imagine is normal. I'll take the dressings off...
