    Naked Wings

Me, too. We have just one coop and one water heater, etc. I'm not sure I want to spend more $$$ on separate equipment to keep one rooster for the winter. :/ Maybe we'll have to have stew. He's a good rooster, though and I want chicks in the spring.

    Naked Wings

I have a hen with the same thing going on! I thought it was from the rooster or other chickens, but after much observation she appears to be the BOSS chicken; even the rooster defers to her. Could it still be from the roo? We have 6 hens and 1 rooster. I would separate her, but afraid of her...

stupid me put two hens together....is it too late?

Well, I took the eggs and consolidated them under one hen, and we got 3 chicks out of 4 eggs! She seems to be a good mommy, so I am pleased! :)

stupid me put two hens together....is it too late?

Let me know how it goes, Steve! These are both first time mommies, but I swear they've been broody all their lives.

stupid me put two hens together....is it too late?

They have about a 2 foot by 4 foot space to share inside, plus outside once the chicks are big enough. Problem is that I won't be around hatching day as multiple circumstances sprung up that will leave me mostly gone that day. :(

stupid me put two hens together....is it too late?

Hi, in my newbie ignorance I let two hens set on eggs since I have two broodies. Figured one of them would work out, right? Each has two eggs. Tomorrow is day 20. My husband built a little separate area for them, and we figured that they could be housed together. Do I need to go out in the...

    nesting box drama

I think the coop is probably about 5 by 10. The hens are 1 and 2 years old. The eggs have strong shells. I feed them layena and food scraps and they have access to grass, dirt and gravel. I haven't noticed eggs being eaten; maybe once or twice!

    nesting box drama

Thanks for the suggestions! I will try putting golf balls in and see if that helps. A good chunk of my eggs are actually broken, and u think it might have to do with the bedding issue. I also found homes for both roosters. A couple hens show signs of being pecked on, so it could be from the...

    nesting box drama

Hi. I've noticed quite a few problems with my chickens lately. I'm wondering if all might be related in some way! Some background: I have 7 birds; I thought I had 1 rooster and 6 hens, but one has recently shown itself to be a rooster (go ahead and laugh, but he sits in the nesting boxes and...

    hen turned into a rooster?!

Hi! I have a one year old blue cochin. I bought it as a baby chick from the "pullet tank," and it seemed like the average hen, only bigger, and she'd consistently poop in the nesting box! I noticed this spring she had developed red feathers along her wings and became somewhat a pariah in the...

chicken that was losing feathers now has egg stuck to her bottom...

Hi, I posted a while back about my hen who was losing feathers around her comb and top of wings. I got no response so I tried to tkae matters into my own hands. I dusted her and the entire flock twice with permethrin dust. Egg production went up initially but has gone back down to nothing. Until...

    hen missing feathers around comb

Hi, getting a little antsy here. ;) I did some research online and decided to do Blu-Kote on her head. Well, my hubby did it since I was out of town. I came home to a very funny-looking chicken! But now I see that feathers have been picked from her "shoulder" (?) areas on both sides...the top...

    hen missing feathers around comb

Hi, I have three hens, three pullets and one rooster. They have a lot of room to roam around and seem to have plenty of room in their coop. One of my hens has been losing feathers from her comb for quite some time now. I caught her tonight (no small feat!) and didn't find any sign of parasites...

chicken with pale comb died...what to look for?

She was just over a year old. Not sure on the breed, a "mutt" I guess! I had checked her a few times and never found any signs of critter infestation and wormed her this spring. I ended up not dissecting..just the idea of corpse sitting outside all day + my own morning sickness + the...

chicken with pale comb died...what to look for?

Hi, I posted a while back about a chicken with a pale comb. I got some helpful advice on anemia and was feeding her protein rich foodds. Last night when I went out I was pleased to see that her comb looked red once again (it had been improving steadily) and she seemed totally normal. This...

    hen with pale comb!

Thanks. Maybe I'll have to scramble up some more eggs to feed. They usually get our meat/cheese/egg scraps and I notice that the other chickens do let her eat so I don't think she's at the bottom of the pecking order or anything. They have oyster shell grit and access to outside where they can...

    hen with pale comb!

Hi, I have a hen who has had a pale comb off and on for about the last couple months. I noticed in April that her comb was very pale and she was "hunched up." I cleaned the coop, dusted them all with diatomaceous earth (giving myself a nasty cough that hung on and on in the process!), wormed...

keeping pullets with the rest of the chickens

Thanks for all the replies! My email only notified me about the first reply, so I had no idea there were so many. I put them all on the starter/grower that I was giving the chicks. Egg production has gone down, but maybe it's just from the introduction of the new pullets. They all seem to get...

keeping pullets with the rest of the chickens

Hi. I have 3 9 week old pullets, 4 hens and a rooster. I had the pullets in their brooder until they got too big and then had them at my parents place as I was staying there and they had a nice pen. Now that we are back I put then in with the chickens. So far so good. No signs of stress in...
