    My TSC treasure...

Hm... I got a chick from TSC (along with 11 others) who now that she is feathering out has curlyish feathers. I just figured she was the one who was always dustbathing and thus messing up her feathers. She was in the bin with the Ass. Red Sex Links. I'll have to keep an eye and see how she...

    Do chickens like water?

A good way to tell if your chicks may like water is the tub. I put my little pullets in the tub with an inch or two of water and they didn't seem to mind it and actually seemed to enjoy it. At least you would have some idea of how they might react. Amber

My chicks sick feet update....treating with tea tree oil.

Jessica, I don't know about the eczema, but I use tea tree oil for cuts and such straight from the bottle. I've also mixed it with lotion to rub into larger areas like my feet when they are extra achy. It is amazing stuff . Amber

    big evil stick

They may not roost in trees like Turkeys (in case you didn't know that Turkeys roosted in trees), but they do roost in hen houses. As for causing them stress... my 2yo cat jumped in the brooder.... that is stress! They got over it quick enough with a handful of oats. Today I introduced a mossy...

Where is the vent on the baby chick?

The lower spot (farther away from the tail) I believe is the belly button. What you need to watch is the pink spot close to the tail. I found out the fun way.... that chicks are a lot like kittens..... Warm water on the bum makes a bomb...um... drop... poopy. My chicks are about a week old and...

My chicks sick feet update....treating with tea tree oil.

Wow, I use tea tree oil for the family. The reason I would never have thought of it with my chickens is my cats HATE the smell so I wouldn't think of it with animals. If it helps, I have mixed tea tree oil and lotion for the family when it comes to dry and broken skin. I just made it a little...

    I tried Treats!

Did you feed them by hand? I love it when they get too excited and mistake my hand for the treat.... ouch LOL.

"Honey, Look at my chick's butt"

Gal, The sign on the box (not the price sign but the shipping box lable they put on the side of the tank) said they were Red Sex-links. I also got mine from TSC. They are sooooooo cute aren't they?

"Honey, Look at my chick's butt"

Ok, this was too funny not to share so I thought I'd put it in here: My son collects rocks. Lots of rocks. Rocks of all shapes and sizes. He just happened to have found this one somewhere that looks like an ostich <sp?> egg. I put it near the edge of the warming corner as something new and...

    Pasty Butt Confusion

Poor DG! I've been watching this thread and *hides head in shame* feeling lucky I haven't had the pasty butt problems. Sorry! I've read in other posts that oatmeal helps pasty butt. I give my girls a little treat of raw oatmeal and like I said I haven't had your troubles. Mine are about a week...

    big evil stick

My chicks are about a week old too and at about 3 days I put a stick in and they could have cared less. Hubby gets home, looks at the stick, then me, then gathers a few rocks. He puts the stick up on the small rocks so that it has about an inch of space above the shavings. They took right to...

"Honey, Look at my chick's butt"

Ok, so this morning I was watching my chicks (about 1 week old now) and of course looking for any signs of things I should worry about. I've been lucky and haven't even had the pasty butt I've read so much about (touch wood). I spot a pink spot around the tail area on one and almost panic...

Has anyone ever done a Treat Chart for baby chicks?

I too am new to BYC and a new chick mom. I also have been searching the threads for helpful information on treats as well as the treat chart. Everyone has been very helpful and the information is great but I agree that finding it in one place would be very benefitial. I realize we noobs are...

    Hello from Northern NH

Ok, got the pictures.... The whole brood! One apart from the rest. Again, I can't thank you all enough for the great advice! I read a lot of posts even if I don't post much myself. For those who might ask: the signs said they are Asst. Red Sex-link pullets and bought from TS yesterday...

    Hello from Northern NH

Thank you all for the warm welcome! The chicks are doing great and we are all very excited to watch them grow. What better way to teach kids? Tony, we are in Littleton. Up here there is still some snow on the ground and only my tulips have managed to escape the earth. We will keep our eyes...

    Hello from Northern NH

I grew up on a farm and have always missed having chickens. For a couple of years now I've been wearing down hubby and he finally said it's time. Of course I didn't wait for him to change his mind! After some planning and research we went to the TS store. Then we came right back home.... I was...
