    Orphaned Opossum

Thanks! Probably going to keep him in pouch until July 11th(but obviously let him out to climb around when he's out of the 'fragile baby' stage where he just eats, sleeps, and potties), since 10 is when they can kinda thermoregulate themselves with a heat pad. If he has trouble regulating...

Look at who just opened his eyes!

    Orphaned Opossum

Turns out that any orphan has to be released, but you can trap any keep one as a pet with permits. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll trap him later on, instead of one of the other neighborhood possums. One can hope!

    Orphaned Opossum

Awww! That's sweet.~ Yes, it's called Metabolic Bone Disease. I'm well aware as I do keep reptiles and found it very fascinating these little fellas can suffer from the same thing. I do know they will naturally prey on reptiles, but that's why I have padlocks on all my cages. Keeps them in and...

    Orphaned Opossum

Once he gets older and a little more active, assuming I get approved for a permit to keep him, I'll probably build a 10' x 10' x 10' indoor enclosure with branches, toys, and other enrichment opportunities. If I get to keep him his name will be Ozzy. <3 I think it would be awesome to also use...

    Orphaned Opossum

Thanks! I thought as juveniles/adults their diets vary from fruits, veggies, insects, small mammals, and amphibians? I do know they're lactose intolerant and it's not generally recommended you allow them to get obese, so intake should be supervised rather than free feeding, and ofcourse they...

    Orphaned Opossum

Ohh, I thought maybe you were one of the many that wasn't aware they were marsupials, my apologies! So many people around here think they're rodents because of the tail. I sure will! He was so dehydrated when I found him, but after getting him all cozy he was starving! Poor baby... I wish the...

    Orphaned Opossum

Do bear in mind these are marsupials and the beginning of their life is fairly different compared to that of a mammal's. I know people may look and think that it's a newborn. If it were a mammal, I'd agree, but marsupials are very different. They begin life after an amazingly short gestation...

    Orphaned Opossum

A day and a half. I know between 6 and 7 weeks they grow hair on their neck and back, which he does have. He weighs 23 grams. It's baffling because if I remember right the eyes begin to open at 8 - 9 weeks of age and them the mouth no longer has its 'seal' at 10 weeks. I find it confusing...

    Orphaned Opossum

Hello! Just to start off, I do have a rehab permit but I don't rehab often as I care for the wildlife alone and I'm not much in the way of funds. I mainly have the permit so I can intervene if necessary and can continue to provide care if the animal(s) are not too overwhelming. My possum...

Anyone in Frankfort, KY wanting backyard chickens?

Well... we moved here in January from Lexington and they allowed up to 6 hens on residential property, just neighbors were generally snobby... I just thought most other towns were the same or didn't care 'cause well.. if a large city allowed it then what kind of problem would these little towns...

    Light down colored female? (Embden)

Ahhh, ok. I think I'm gonna go ahead and do DNA sexing, it's only $20. I know downy and feather color isn't a sure-fire way, especially if it may be a hybrid. Just put it an order for some blood collection kits, will probably know in a week or two! She has a duckling friend. Don't think I...

    Light down colored female? (Embden)

I got a lot of mixed signals with my last thread regarding Angel and her downy, and, when posting her vent I got a few responses but they all said they weren't experienced in the field. Now she's a little bit older and her feathers are either pointing to female.. or hybrid.. What do you all...

Thought it was a girl? (Embden Goose)

Yeeeeeahhh... There's a reason downy sexing is no longer working for this situation and why I asked for the input of an experienced vent sexer on my video. Downy seems to be telling everyone she is a he, but her vent seems to say otherwise, meaning she could be a very light colored female. Once...

Early lobe development or just really fat?

She eats mostly grass, she prefers it. At night I leave grain, grass, and water in the event she eats all the grass while I'm asleep. During the day, though, she always chooses grass over grain but will eat grains if she has to. I'm raising her as a pet goose.

Early lobe development or just really fat?

From what reading I can find on lobe development, it seems they develop a lot later than a little over two weeks of age... but I find my 17 day old gosling developing two lobe like flaps between her legs... Is she developing them really REALLY early? Is she really fat? She eats a lot, fresh...

    Do these eggs look viable?

Ok~ Strange thing is though, only one has a blood ring. When they die, do they always develop a blood ring?

    Do these eggs look viable?

I just decided to humor myself and candle them before turning them and it's not looking promising at all now that they've been incubated for a day... I'm progressively seeing more dark spots developing and no signs of veins... and I'm pretty sure that's not positive.. so this is probably a dud...

    What are my goslings?

First two are definitely Africans~ Very rewarding to have. The other looks like a Tufted.

Thought it was a girl? (Embden Goose)

Anyone experienced in vent sexing have any input on my video in post #7? I'd really like to know 100%. I guess when she starts feathering out I could DNA sex her via feather samples if no one has any sure fire input... Also, is it possible for a Embden to develop lobes this early? I thought they...
