Can you tell me what breed he is?

My daughter who is 9 just loves him. He sets down when she wants to pick him up. He was raised in the city in confined conditions and seems to have readily acclimated to ranch living. He is so darn cute to watch walking around and getting use to open space and free ranging with my girls.

    Turkeys Setting on Chicken Eggs

I have 2 Bourbon Red hens setting on eggs. I had been thinking about buying an incubator to hatch some Black Copper Maran chicks. However, my BR's are setting so well, I decided to add some chickens eggs to see if they will hatch them for me. Has anyone ever done this? I'm curious to hear...

    My Hens Aren't Setting!

I have 2 hens & 1 tom. Mating season has definitely started at our house. The girls are laying and have around 10 eggs in their nest. Last year they took turns setting and my tom even sat on the eggs which gave the girls a break. But so far this year no one is setting on the eggs. The hens...

Is it possible to tell sexes on 2 week old BO chicks?

I have 5 Black Copper French Maran chicks that are 2 weeks old. I have 2 chicks that the tail feathers haven’t come in yet. Based on their behavior, I have thought they were roos. The other chicks have tail feathers and all seem to be hens. This was only an observation and then I read this...

    My New Brood!

My single henny is doing well. She is not alone by design. We had an unfortunate accident that brought us to this place. I still let her free range and have found that without the flock she sticks close to me and our dogs. She comes running when I call her and knows I have treats for her...

    My New Brood!

I am very excited because I just purchased 5 Black Copper Maran chicks. They are out of the Wade Jeane and Bev Davis lines. I saw the rooster and hen and was able to confirm the dark eggs the hen produces. The breeder I purchased them from has strived to maintain the breed standards for both...

    My hens stopped laying!!

The weather has relatively the same as last year. They are fully feathered. They have not been free ranging since winter hit. They laid very well last winter. I’m stumped. We are starting to think it has something to do with the rooster. He is the only variable in this equation. We just...

    My hens stopped laying!!

Question: I have 2 year old hens that initially laid very well. Last May I introduced a rooster. They laid until they started molting. They molted for almost 2 months which seemed long. When they started to lay again they laid for about 4 weeks and then stopped. That has been about 8 weeks...

    Rooster Behavior Question

I have to agree … I like having a rooster. He has added a dimension I never expected. And he is beautiful and has a fabulous crow. We love listening to him. And our girls love him too. Gotta have a roo in the flock!!

Giant hens, no eggs - BBQ incoming

I have Buff’s that are 2 years old. They were at least 6 months old before they started to lay. My hens are molting for a 2nd time this year and don’t lay when molting. Once Buff’s start laying, they are prolific layers. Patience might be the key here. Good luck!!

    Rooster Behavior Question

I ended up keeping him and the girls in their pen for a couple of weeks, meaning, no free ranging. That seemed to do the trick. I guess it made him realize who was really in charge. Regardless, he changed his behavior and is behaving himself, which is all I wanted. Now we can look forward to...

    Rooster Behavior Question

I have a question that maybe one of the experts out there can help me with! I have a small flock of Buff Orpington hens that are 2 years old. Whenever I have ”treats” for them I have always called them and they come running. About a month ago I adopted a 4 month old rooster whose fate was to...
