Oh dear! I just read the info. Wyorp Rock sent. This certainly seems like what it could be! Bocktoberry, it seemed to be partially passed but still attached to the vent. She doesn't feel swollen and is acting fine. Is this something that can infect my other 9 hens? Did we do something wrong to...
Ok...an update. This is what was on the hen. It appears as though it fell off when my daughters were placing her in the cage as they found it nearby. I have no idea what this is. It appears fleshy inside. We've cleaned up the hen and there is no obvious external wound. I'm mystified and a bit...
The girls brought me this chicken a moment ago with this large mass hanging from her vent. They put her in a cage separate from the other hens while I tried to place a call to the vet. I couldn't get through so Iwent to look at her again. And the mass is gone!! What is this? A bound egg...
Thanks for your suggestions. I do appreciate it :) It's just frustrating to have to buy store bought eggs now.Hoping things will turn around for us soon!
We did have them on 16% layer feed, but just switched them over on Tuesday to an 18% extra egg production crumble. That was the highest % I found at the feed store.
We have 2 buff orpington,2 australorp, 2 barred rock, 4 easter eggers. I remember that my oldest hens initial lay came last year (2014) around Christmas. They laid regularly through that cold winter. We were getting about 6 or 7 a day in July. Around October the hens went into a molt and...
We have 10 hen's who haven't laid since mid December. 7 are approaching 2 years old. 3 are approaching a year old. I got one egg on January 24. That's it. Nothing more. The flock looks healthy and happy. They're well fed and always have access to fresh water. I thought that maybe it was the cold...
Thanks for the advice. I just checked them for the night and she was on the roost not the nest, so I guess she's not truly broody. So is it just a matter of time? Do I allow her a few eggs even day and then collect at night if she's roosting?
I have a a buff orpington who has gone a bit broody. On sunday, i found her sitting on her own eggs as well as the eggs laid by a few of the other hens. Then she left the nest for a while so we collected those eggs figuring that she wasn't truly broody yet. Today, we again found her on 3 eggs. I...
Thanks for the answer. So, now I have to figure out why We stopped getting eggs from her. Is it normal for a hen to consistently give an egg a day or every other day...then nothing at all for 2 weeks?
We got 8 chicks mid June 2014. 2 were EE. One turned out to be a roo. All the hens began to lay the week before Christmas, and we were delighted that we were getting a green egg a day from our EE (so I assume). The other hens are buff orps, australorps, and barred rock. However, we haven't had...
We had this happen to us too. Fortunately, the pullet had only recently gotten herself stuck when we noticed and we're able to get her out safely. The feeder had gotten low. That's why we think she got in so far. We make sure they are now always very full and haven't had any other issues. Sorry...
This may not be the right place to post this question, but I have a 13 week old rooster who is missing both his sickle feathers. I don't know if they fell out or were pulled. He seems fine otherwise. We have 7 pullets with him. They seem fine too. Haven't noticed anyone picking on him. Any ideas?
Thanks KieksterChicken and lightchick! We have decided to keep him and see how he turns out. I feel better knowing that we have a plan if he starts to exhibit aggression. Thought about getting another ee pullet of the same age from a local woman, but after reading some of the horror stories...
Wyandottes7, with this one turning out to be male, we only have 7 hens. So I guess he'll have to go right? My children are begging for me to keep him to see if he'll turn out "mean". I don't know what to just yet. We, like most others, got them for eggs and fun. Too bad it was an ee that is a...
