Our little flock of mallards have all started to fly. We have one female who seems to refuse to fly. From what we can tell she can fly. We have seen her fly about 50 yards and about 10 feet in the air. But, when it comes to out and out flying way up in the sky she just won't do it.
Is there...
It seems like I've heard that the drakes never learn to quack. Only the hens.
If this is true, it is possible to own a flock of drakes only? This is my first year with Mallards. They've been so much fun, but they have become VERY noisy!
Next year I would like to try ordering drakes only...
Is there anything I can do to encourage them? We have 5 acres of swampy land with a small pond. I would love for them to enjoy it all, but all they do is hang around the house!
My Mallards were born on April 27th. That would make them about 9 or 10 weeks old. I kind of thought they would be flying by now. So far they can get about 5 feet off the ground and fly a few feet, but that's all. Is this typical?
Our dog is 1/2 Basset and 1/2 Brittany Spaniel. She is literally Momma to our ducks. When they were tiny she wouldn't let them out of her sight. She would make them sleep right next to her. She also would take each one of them and lick it just like a puppy. Very cute!
My Mallards are 4 weeks old now. They are about 75% feathered (just their heads and part of their backs are down). I let them free range on our lawn during the day and in the evening I put them in a pen outside. When they are in their pen I give them what I have left of their chick starter...
We keep our ducks in a movable pen. We move them around our back yard throughout the day. I put a 2' round plastic sled in the pen for their water.
I always set it at a slight angle then fill it with a garden hose. When it is full I turn the water in the garden hose down to a dribble. I...
Our ducklings are 1.5 weeks old now. This is our first experience with ducks or any kind of farm animal. We wondered how our 7 year old Basset/Spaniel would do with the ducks.
From the moment she saw them she became their momma. It's the cutest thing you've seen! She frets over them and...
One of my ducklings (about a week old) has an eye that is just a little bit mattery. I noticed it yesterday, but just thought it had been into some kind of a mess. Today I looked at it a little more closely and discovered that it is kind of "goopy".
I took a wet cloth and gently wiped the eye...
My ducklings are 4 days old. It seems to me like they hardly eat anything. I have 9 of them and they've probably only eaten 1.5 cups of the starter feed that I give them.
They do seem to be thriving. They have probably tripled in size since we got them on Wednesday. They also seem to be...

I'm so new at this that I have to ask an obvious question: When can I start feeding them something besides starter feed?
I know these are simple questions, but I gotta find the answers somehow?
Thanks!
Our baby Mallards just arrived this morning. From what I understand, their brooder needs to be at 90 degrees.
I can't seem to get ours above 80 degrees today. But, the ducklings seem to be doing ok. They are running around the brooder and eating and drinking.
Do you think they are ok...
