    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

So, at least for my little flock, it took about a week for their chicken emotions to settle down enough to lay eggs again after a scare. I got three eggs yesterday. The usual is 3-4eggs. My strongest layer bounced back a few days ahead of the others.

I believe my little flock of 5 had a scare the other night... I won't go into the details, but suffice it to say they've laid ZERO eggs for the past several days. If my hypothesis is true.... How long will it take for their little chicken emotions to settle down enough for them to lay eggs again?

Seems like the snake would just crawl under it! I'm glad it met its doom! It looks like you have. A great set up, CMOM. My nest box is like a drive through restaurant for snakes!!!

Hmmmm. Maybe it wasn't the poultry dust… maybe it wasn't the smelly (but dry) hay… maybe it was the huge snake and snake poop under the hay that stopped my girls from laying in the nest box! I found it when I was taking the hay out to put the moss in! Nasty snake! A friend came and saved me! :/...

dogWonder, I have no access to coconut husks.... But would love to see some pics! It's hard to visualize what exactly you're talking about. CMOM... my hen has been laying in the nest box for a year.... Until I changed the hay about a week-10 days ago...... And now her eggs are in the sand...

CMOM! Moss! Perfect! My place is covered in oaks and moss! I don't know why I didn't think of it! I'm in Chiefland! Moss is easy to come by! I've read about microwaving it for a few seconds to kill bugs when using Spanish moss for flower or crafts… I'll try that! THANKS!!!

I used a huge appliance box I got from Sears as a brooder. I put a folded tarp underneath and left the bottom open, using pine pellets as bedding. I kept them in a spare bedroom until they went outside. Here's my question for the group. I need bedding for a SINGLE nest box(3 hens only, and...

CMOM, where she looks whitish… she was always dark grey, blending to black (blue). She was a total poof ball! Her comb is nice and red, and I read that if its mites the comb would be pale. What do you think? She wasn't white looking above her legs before either.

My chickens are just over a year old.... They were hatched in spring of 2014.... I will check for mites! I'm heading out to clean my coop in just a little while!

Thanks, Daskhan! Someone else, had told me a year ago that a roo needed at least 10 hens. Two of the hens ARE missing feathers from around their head (redspots), though not terribly. Separating the roo from the hens isn't really possible for me right now… unless I let the hens free range and...

Hello Friends, I am only a year in to the backyard chicken hobby. I have 3 hens and one roo. Three, the roo and two hens are bantam blue Cochins, and the other hen is a cross bred, Wyandotte/Cochin. The cross hen is the only one laying right now. I have noticed that my hens are looking a bit...

Whoo Hooo! Third time is the charm! Egg #3 was laid in the nest box! I'm so stinking excited! After 8 months of having chickens as a hobby I finally have eggs!!! Hallelujah, I have EGGS! I loved my birds before, but this makes them so much more fun!

Advice/Insight? The hen That I suspect is the one who laid the eggs in the above pic, has radically changed behavior. She is compulsively walking back and forth back and forth in a two to three foot pace looking out of the run. (She's never been free ranged). SHE of all my birds has seemed the...

FINALLY! I got the first eggs in my chicken hobbyist LIFE on Saturday! They arrived (well, I found them anyway) eight months and 10 days after hatching my hens in an incubator. No sign of an egg yesterday, but here's hoping for another one today! #BlueCochinsLayLate! :weee The top pic shows...

My chickens seem to be eating a lot more in recently! They're about 30-32 weeks old. I'm assuming the colder weather may require more calories from them to maintain their body heat. Thoughts?

:D Not to be outdone by night shots, I just went out and tossed an old table cloth over the open end of my coop. The other end is closed up nicely with only a vent at the tip of the 'A' in the gable. It actually feels pretty nice out there right now! Tomorrow night will be a different story!
