I was pretty sure my 8-week old splash Cochin was a boy because he's had little red wattles and a little pink comb since about 3 weeks... but they don't seem to be getting any bigger and after looking at other photos of splash Cochins, I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but might he be a she...
Oh very sorry to say but I have one the same age with a barely visible pale yellow comb and no wattles at all - I'm assuming she's a pullet which means yours may well be Roos :(
StarMeKritten, As a new SLW chick owner, I would just like to say how much I appreciate all your work on this thread! It's taken me two evenings to read all the posts (starting back in 2010 I believe!) and I have learned so much, mostly from your posts. It is so nice to find such helpful...
Also, I'm not sure if the diseases that the beetles carry also applies to the mealworms (anyone know?). I started a mealworm farm in December and my first generation of mealworms is now as big as the ones I started with and many more will follow. The chickens would twirl on their heads for...
Bummer! But it's fun checking out the various sexing methods that have been touted as reliable... and presumably proving them wrong (although in this case I'd be thrilled if by some fluke these chicks defied the odds and turned out to be 12 pullets and 1 roo!)
It's really just for fun - I'm happy to wait four weeks because they are just soooo cute right now, and they change so quickly! I don't expect these methods will work, but it's fun to document things now so we can look back later. I will post more pictures when I see differences in their combs...

Langshan #1: Wing test

We have a group of thirteen 5-day old chicks of the following breeds: 3 buff orpingtons and 2 blue cochins, white crested black polish, black australorps, silver grey dorkings, and black langshans.
After doing some reading and watching youtube videos on how to sex baby chicks, we decided to...
I've had great success using probiotics for various ailments in my backyard chickens and I made a video showing how they helped a badly battered rescue chicken.
Yay!!! This thread has been like waiting for the next episode of Breaking Bad or something! So glad you caught the MF. I too was kind of expecting something even bigger than that. I hope he was a lone ranger. :)
