I always assumed when they started trilling and cooing (?) when on the roost, it was in response to our presence in the coop and that otherwise, all would be quiet. I do enjoy it; such sweet sounds. It seems that if I talk very softly to them, they talk back. I would like to have a recording...
I'll bet they have thanksgiving marked on the calender in their coop.

I've not yet been able to feed them chicken (maybe one day), but I do give them other leftover meats and they are NUTS for it!

Yep. And it's getting more expensive to feed them too.
Good thing they're so much fun to have around.
(Getting 0-3/day from 8 mature hens. They have molted the past 6-8 weeks, but didn't lay much better during spring and summer.)
Not many eggs from our 8 girls either. Been this way for months. 2-3 most days, occasionally 4. One egg yesterday, 0 the day before.
If their laying doesn't pick up some this fall, I don't know how we can just keep feeding them indefinitely for so few eggs. Maybe we expect too much but 50%...
We have a thin, weak, lethargic hen. Our first sick one since we got our girls just over a year ago. She's a 1 1/2 yr.-old Australorp.
We noticed about 3 days ago that her comb was very shrunken and pale and she was moving very slowly. In handling her yesterday, felt how thin she is. She is not...
We also have a thin, weak, lethargic hen. Our first sick one since we got our girls just over a year ago. She's a 1 1/2 yr.-old Australorp.

improvement here - 5 eggs yesterday - haven't gathered today...
DH thinks we have at least one hen that has never laid a single egg. I'm not so sure. She is the runt and only has one good eye. We call her Little Bit and she is the sweetest thing ever. I don't care if she doesn't lay, I just...
Welcome to the club, Egg_newton.
Our girls have dropped way off and it did seem to coincide with one of them going broody. This was about 4 weeks ago! We haven't found any other problems/causes.
Same story here. Ten hens, about 18 mos. old. Only getting 2-4 eggs a day, most days, for the past few weeks. Sunday, I got just one. We got more eggs through the winter than we're getting now. We do have one who is broody, but other than that, nothing different going on and no problems we can...

Exactly. Ours will run past their waterers with fresh clean water in them to get to the mud puddle in their pen to drink and I swear they like it even better after they poop in it!!!
I do like the vinegar idea though and I have also considered putting a little colloidal silver in their...
Imp,
Sounds a lot like our experience with an Australorp. I saw her on eggs only once. Usually she was just setting. (I think she just wanted some "quiet time" Sometimes we would put her out in the pen when the others were getting fed their scratch or a treat; sometimes we just let her be. She...
I'm in NE Okla. Temps in the 90s and heat index 100+.
Our 10 girls only laid 3 eggs yesterday but today I've gotten 7 so far.
I put ice in their water and DH is buying a mister today. Their coop is well insulated, they have shade in the hottest part of the day, although we may need to add a...

Your 10 sound like my 10.
The past 13 days: 8,5,7,8,5,7,7,3,6,5,5,3, and 4 eggs so far today.
We have cooled off to 68 degrees today. I was hoping for a few more. Maybe the heat was not it either...
...but the day's not over...
We have 10 pullets/hens (not sure of their ages.) We bought them from a neighbor that had a flock of 70+ chickens. We told them we wanted started pullets and they hand-picked them. In the 5 weeks we've had them, we've never gotten 10 eggs in one day. Can't remember more than 8.
This has been...
We're getting fewer eggs the last few days and I'm noticing just a few feathers here and there. I'm not sure if they're moulting or not though. It's a subject I don't know much about (I thought they moulted in late summer) and we're newbies. We've had the girls for about 5 weeks.
Would any of...
Jamie,
I have read that started pullets are about 17 weeks old, but then I'm a newbie, so I could be wrong.
If they are about that age, I would expect they'd start laying anytime now and surely within the next month or so.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm giving out bad info.
